Refuse Collector Roswell, GA, US Salary Range: $13.80 To $17.93 Hourly Department: Environmental/Public Works Pay Grade: 502 FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt Job Code: E630 JOB SUMMARY The purpose of this classification is to collect garbage and yard trash on an assigned route. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Collect garbage and yard trash from residential homes or businesses; ensure complete removal of all acceptable garbage or trash; replace garbage bins and place them in appropriate locations. Follow safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor the work environment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals. Collect miscellaneous items at requested sites and dispose of material appropriately. Receive and respond to customer questions and complaints regarding problems pertaining to refuse; report questions and complaints to the direct supervisor. Operate packer on garbage truck or other tools as necessary to complete essential functions, including the use of shovels, pitchforks, yard rakes, and brooms. Clean garbage truck daily to ensure a sanitary working vehicle; remove litter from interior and wash down exterior. Communicate with supervisor, employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review work status, exchange information, or resolve problems; respond to requests for service or assistance. Prepare or complete time cards or other documents. Serve as a relief driver, tasked with running routes when the driver of a particular route is unavailable. Perform other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Requires a High School Diploma; six (6) months of experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Ability to compile, assemble, copy, record, and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan; includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines. Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Ability to utilize a wide variety of referenced data and information. Ability to perform addition and subtraction. May include counting, recording of counts, and basic measuring. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form; involves semi‑routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action. Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre‑defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is heavy and requires the ability to exert moderate effort in heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling moderately heavy objects and materials (must be able to lift up to 100 pounds). Tasks also require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is regularly performed in exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/human bites, or rude/irate customers.
