Summary

Performs inspections of public works construction project work-in-progress. Conducts inspections at various intervals in the construction process to verify that methods, materials, and completed projects comply with City specifications.

The Construction Inspector is the first of two skill levels leading to specialization within Engineering Technician, Construction Coordinator and Engineering career paths. The Construction Inspector works in the field along with crews to verify compliance with specifications and materials. Advancement to Senior Construction Inspector is possible with demonstrated competency inspecting a wide variety of development and public works construction. The Construction Coordinator is the first professional level and requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering or construction management discipline and active status as an Engineer-In-Training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Inspects public works projects, such as, but not limited to subsurface and surface street construction, structures, and other infrastructure, for quality of work and material, for proper line, grade, slope, placement, and for adherence to stipulations and specifications.
• Inspects and documents methods of construction utilized by contractors. Checks for proper dimensions, quantities, and proper use of materials, assuring that contractor work conforms to project plans and specifications.
• Discusses, explains, interprets, and relays changes to contractor plans during construction.
• Interprets and evaluates construction methods and materials, suggesting alternatives should questions arise about compliance with specifications.
• Inspects and prepares daily reports on the construction of curbs, sidewalks, and street and other pavements for proper grade and slope. Checks forms for proper alignments and surfacing and ADA compliance.
• Inspects installation of storm drains, including reviews of storm water prevention plans.
• Checks construction site grade levels and roadway crown before and after surfacing material has been applied using modern survey instrumentation.
• Reviews and issues excavation permits, and inspects road cuts for all forms of below ground utility and infrastructure. Assures compliance with construction specifications, waterworks and pavement repair standards.
• Assembles and evaluates technical data and provides guidance on design, construction methods and materials.
• May participate in preconstruction meetings with departmental staff, engineers, contractors, and developers.
• Creates, assembles and maintains complete files of work-in-progress and code compliance inspections.
• May observe and provide safety advice to work teams engaged in construction.
• Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
