Job Description

The Shop Helper supports conventional and CNC machining operations and is responsible for operating precision grinding machinery to produce high-quality, tight-tolerance ceramic components in accordance with engineering specifications. This role includes setting up, operating, and dimensionally inspecting parts on equipment such as surface grinders, rotary surface grinders, Blanchard grinders, manual mills, CNC machines, polishing and lapping tools, and slicing equipment. The position requires strong attention to detail, a solid understanding of machining processes, and a consistent commitment to safety and product quality.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate conventional and CNC machining equipment, including surface grinders, rotary surface grinders, Blanchard grinders, manual mills, and CNC machines, to produce precision ceramic components.
• Perform dimensional inspections on machined parts using appropriate measuring tools to ensure tight tolerances and compliance with engineering specifications.
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and GD&T symbols to correctly set up and run machining operations.
• Upload and manage CNC programs, verify machine offsets, and perform basic troubleshooting to maintain efficient and accurate production.
• Use polishing, lapping, and slicing equipment to finish components to required surface and dimensional standards.
• Conduct quality inspections throughout the machining process using calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and other precision measuring instruments.
• Assist with manual machining tasks and conventional machining processes as needed to support production requirements.
• Follow lean manufacturing practices, including 5S, to maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area.
• Perform routine machine maintenance activities to support equipment reliability and performance.
• Work within an ITAR-regulated environment and adhere to all applicable procedures and documentation requirements.
• Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to coordinate workflow and meet production schedules.
• Maintain a strong focus on safety, using required PPE and following all safety guidelines and shop procedures.

Essential Skills

• High School Diploma or GED.
• 1+ years of experience in a CNC machining environment preferred.
• Hands-on experience with CNC mills, lathes, grinders, or surface grinders.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of GD&T and its application to machining and inspection.
• Proficiency using precision measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, and dial indicators.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work with a variety of machining equipment.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds as part of daily duties.
• Excellent communication skills to work effectively with production and engineering teams.
• Ability to operate within an ITAR environment and meet all related requirements.
• Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, tight-tolerance components.
• Troubleshooting skills for basic machining and CNC issues.
• Capability to perform CNC set-up tasks and manage machine offsets.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working with precision grinding machinery in aerospace, semiconductor, or medical device manufacturing environments.
• Familiarity in manual machining and surface grinding operations.
• Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement practices.
• Experience with 5S workplace organization in a manufacturing or machine shop setting.
• Basic machine maintenance experience to support preventive and routine upkeep.
• ERP system experience in a production or manufacturing environment.
• Exposure to ITAR-controlled manufacturing environments.
• Understanding of quality inspection processes for high-precision components.
• Comfort working with polishing, lapping, and slicing equipment for component finishing.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing and machine shop environment focused on producing high-precision components. You will work primarily on CNC machining equipment and conventional machines such as grinders and mills, supporting production requirements for tight-tolerance ceramic parts. The facility is clean, organized, and safety-oriented, with established lean and 5S practices. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, and you should be comfortable standing throughout the shift, performing inspections, and handling machined parts in a structured, process-driven setting.

This is a Contract position based out of Fremont, CA.

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $31.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
