Director of Elementary Education
The Director of Elementary Curriculum provides district-level leadership for the development, implementation, coordination, and continuous improvement of elementary curriculum, instruction, assessment, intervention, and professional learning.
The Director collaborates with principals, instructional coaches, teachers, and district leadership to ensure standards-aligned curriculum, effective instructional practices, appropriate academic interventions, and consistent implementation of district instructional priorities. The Director uses student achievement data, research, and best practices to support continuous improvement in teaching and learning across the district's elementary schools.
Essential Functions:
- Provide district-level leadership for the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of elementary curriculum and instructional programs.
- Ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment with South Carolina academic standards, district instructional expectations, and identified student needs.
- Collaborate with elementary principals, instructional coaches, teachers, and district staff to strengthen instructional practices and improve student achievement.
- Analyze district, school, and student achievement data to identify instructional priorities, monitor student progress, evaluate program effectiveness, and guide continuous improvement.
- Lead and coordinate the development, implementation, and revision of curriculum maps, pacing guides, instructional resources, unit plans, and other district curriculum documents.
- Provide leadership for elementary Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), intervention programs, and other academic supports designed to address individual student needs.
- Provide leadership and support to instructional coaches and teacher leaders, including establishing expectations for instructional coaching, collaborative planning, professional learning, and implementation of district instructional priorities.
- Plan, coordinate, facilitate, and monitor professional development for K-12 administrators, instructional coaches, teachers, and other instructional staff based on district priorities, student achievement data, and identified professional learning needs.
- Support schools in the implementation of evidence-based instructional practices, district instructional models, curriculum resources, intervention programs, digital content, and instructional technology.
- Conduct school visits and classroom walkthroughs to monitor implementation of curriculum, instructional programs, interventions, and district academic initiatives and provide appropriate feedback and support to school leadership.
- Facilitate collaboration among elementary schools, grade levels, and content areas to promote vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment, instructional consistency, and sharing of effective practices.
- Coordinate the review, selection, adoption, implementation, and evaluation of textbooks, digital resources, instructional materials, and academic programs with appropriate input from teachers and administrators.
- Support elementary principals and instructional leaders in developing and implementing school improvement strategies related to curriculum, instruction, intervention, professional learning, and student achievement.
- Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of district instructional programs, resources, and interventions and recommend adjustments based on student outcomes, research, and best practices.
- Provide consultation, technical assistance, and instructional guidance to administrators, instructional coaches, teachers, and other district personnel regarding elementary curriculum and instruction.
- Remain current on educational research, South Carolina academic standards, instructional practices, assessment requirements, state initiatives, and federal and state requirements affecting elementary education.
- Develop, administer, and monitor assigned budgets, program accounts, instructional resources, and expenditures to support elementary curriculum and district academic priorities.
- Prepare and maintain required reports, records, curriculum documents, presentations, data analyses, and other documentation related to elementary instructional programs.
- Communicate effectively with administrators, teachers, families, the South Carolina Department of Education, and other stakeholders regarding elementary curriculum, instructional programs, and district academic initiatives.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and employee records and protected information in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, Board policy, and district procedures.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance and punctuality. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
Other Duties: Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Job Specifications: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of professional personnel.
Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Educational Administration, Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or a related field.
- Valid South Carolina teaching certificate and appropriate administrative certification.
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching or other relevant professional educational experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of elementary curriculum, South Carolina academic standards, evidence-based instructional practices, assessment, intervention, and curriculum development.
- Experience using student achievement and assessment data to guide instructional decisions and school improvement.
- Ability to lead curriculum development, professional learning, instructional improvement, and implementation of district academic initiatives.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with principals, instructional coaches, teachers, district personnel, and other stakeholders.
- Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with instructional technology, student data systems, digital resources, presentation software, and other technology necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state requirements, South Carolina Department of Education regulations, Board policies, and district procedures related to curriculum and instruction.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable, consistent with applicable certification requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- South Carolina certification as an Elementary Principal.
- Minimum of three (3) years of successful administrative, supervisory, instructional coaching, or curriculum leadership experience.
- Successful experience as an elementary school administrator or instructional leader.
- Experience leading curriculum development, professional learning, instructional coaching, MTSS/intervention, and school improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience using data to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.
Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach, bend, stoop, and use hands for fine motor tasks.

- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate computers, telephones, mobile devices, and other office equipment.

- Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, video conferencing, presentations, and written communication.
- Ability to move throughout schools, classrooms, district facilities, and other locations as required.
- Ability to travel between district locations and to meetings, conferences, student placements, and other locations as necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.

The employee primarily works in district offices, schools, classrooms, meeting environments, and professional development settings. The position requires frequent interaction with administrators, instructional coaches, teachers, students, and other stakeholders. The position may require work outside normal business hours for professional development, meetings, school events, Board meetings, and other district activities.
Salary: In accordance with the District's approved administrative salary schedule.
