PROGRAM ASSISTANT (PART-TIME)

Job Title

Supports the library's youth and community services by developing and delivering engaging educational, recreational, STEM, literacy, and outreach programs while providing excellent customer service and assisting with daily library operations.

Essential Duties

Assists the programming librarian team to develop and implement innovative programs that encourage literacy, library use and enhance the image of the library in the community.

Assists with planning and implementing weekly programming, as well as annual summer reading programming for all ages.

Provides outstanding internal and external customer service. Demonstrates a positive attitude and supports library goals and objectives.

Assists with daily operation of the programming area of the library.

May organize and give tours of the library to students and groups.

Works closely with teachers, preschool operators, and parents providing recreational, and educational content, programs and materials.

Offers outreach programming and events at external locations.

May decorate the library spaces to align with chosen themes.

Develops creative flyers and displays to promote programs and build interest and participation.

Plans crafts for programs and events, and attend outreach events.

Performs in-depth reference service as needed.

Offer assistance to library users navigating library resources and offerings.

Assists in departmental collection needs, such as moving books, modifying locations, or shelving titles.

This position reports to the Teen Librarian.

Assists Circulation Department and Children's Department as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required with previous compensated work with programming preferred.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Understanding of child, teen and adult learning styles. Ability to think creatively. Ability to learn Dewey Decimal System and other alphabetic and/or numeric library material classification systems and place library material in the proper place pursuant to these systems. Ability to communicate effectively with children of all ages and adults. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library staff and the general public. Study, learn and utilize principals of youth library competencies including Every Child Ready to Read, and YALSA's Teen Services within 180 days of hire. Study and gain familiarity with New Mexico State Library training resources. Bilingual preferred.

Supervision Received: Works under the guidance and direction of the Teen Librarian and the Library Director.

Licensing and Certifications: Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of hire. Ability to obtain CPR/AED certification within 90 days of hire. Valid state issued driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and use hands and arms to push and moderately heavy wheeled cart in a level indoor setting and place books or other materials over one foot above their head or below their knees. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The City of Hobbs will provide 80% to 90% Heath Insurance Coverage from Single to Family coverage.

Employees are eligible for 100% short-term disability coverage provided by the City of Hobbs.

Employer PERA contributions 14.8% for general, 28.775% for HPD, 30.9% for HFD.

CDL pay - $6,000 per year (if applicable).

PTO accruals start at 12 hours per month (144 hours per year) and progressively increase based on years of service to 20 hours per month (240 hours per year) at year 21.

Bilingual Pay - $1,500 dollar incentive per year upon completion of yearly proficiency test.

Education Incentive - ($1,000, $4,000, $6,000 dollars - Associates, Bachelor's, Masters; degree must be relevant to position and above the current minimum requirements of the held position).

Longevity Pay - Begins at the completion of 10 years of service. Gradually increased.

Retention Incentive - $600 incentive yearly with years 1-9 of completed service

13 Paid Holidays.

Bereavement Leave - 5 days per calendar year per personnel rules guidelines.

Military Leave - (120 hours per year for general, 183.75 per year for HPD, 360 hours per year for HFD).
