Controller

An established alternative investment firm is seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the finance and accounting function across a growing investment platform. This individual will oversee fund and corporate financial operations, working closely with third-party administrators, auditors, tax advisors, banking partners, and senior leadership.

This is a highly visible role within a dynamic organization, requiring a professional who combines technical accounting expertise with strong operational discipline and a proactive approach to problem-solving. The Controller will serve as the internal owner of the firm's financial infrastructure, ensuring institutional-quality reporting, robust internal controls, and accurate oversight of all fund and corporate accounting activities.

Key Responsibilities

Fund Accounting & Administrator Oversight

• Oversee fund and special purpose vehicle accounting operations in partnership with third-party fund administrators.
• Review and validate NAV packages, capital account statements, and distribution calculations to ensure accuracy and compliance with governing documents.
• Maintain independent oversight of administrator outputs through reconciliations, variance analysis, and reasonability reviews.
• Maintain internal accounting records and validation processes across investment vehicles.
• Serve as the primary internal resource on fund accounting matters.

Audit, Tax & External Reporting

• Lead year-end audits and periodic financial reviews across fund and corporate entities.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, tax advisors, and other financial service providers.
• Coordinate preparation and review of audited financial statements, tax filings, investor tax reporting, and supporting schedules.
• Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and other applicable accounting standards.

Capital Activity & Investor Reporting

• Oversee investor capital activity, including subscriptions, transfers, distributions, and redemptions where applicable.
• Partner with investor relations and operations teams to support investor reporting and due diligence requests.
• Maintain a high standard of accuracy and transparency in investor-facing financial materials.

Treasury & Cash Management

• Manage cash operations across fund and management company entities.
• Lead liquidity management, cash forecasting, and capital planning activities.
• Oversee wire activity, capital movements, and treasury controls.
• Coordinate with banking partners to support ongoing treasury operations and relationships.

Financial Reporting, Forecasting & Analysis

• Develop and maintain monthly, quarterly, and annual management reporting packages.
• Support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning initiatives.
• Provide financial analysis and performance insights to senior leadership.

Process Improvement & Internal Controls

• Build and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and reporting processes.
• Identify opportunities to improve workflows, reporting timelines, and operational efficiency.
• Implement scalable best practices to support organizational growth.
• Evaluate and recommend technology solutions to improve accounting and reporting capabilities.

Service Provider Management

• Oversee relationships with third-party administrators, auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners.
• Monitor service provider performance and ensure timely, high-quality deliverables.
• Coordinate effectively across internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA required.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities.
• Direct experience with private funds, alternative investments, or investment management platforms required.
• Public accounting experience (Big Four or equivalent) strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of fund structures, capital accounts, investor allocations, and fund reporting.
• Experience overseeing third-party administrators and external service providers.
• Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, high-performance environment.
• Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and accountability.
• Advanced Excel and financial reporting system proficiency.
