Professor
University of Utah
The Division of Biostatistics in the Department of Population Health Sciences (PHS) at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an opening for an Associate or Full Professor-level faculty. We seek a candidate who will serve as the director of the University of Utah's Translational Research: Implementation, Analysis and Design (TRIAD) Team which includes more than 40 master's and PhD trained biostatisticians and research methodologists in related quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including health economics, survey design, qualitative research, dissemination and implementation, and systematic review. TRIAD is one of nine cores within the University of Utah's Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) which supports biomedical research across the University of Utah and affiliated institutions. The CTSI's mission is innovation, education and services to drive research that advances health. It is funded by the NCATS Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program. TRIAD is a multi‑departmental group, whose biostatistics faculty have primary appointments primarily in the Division of Epidemiology in the Department of Internal Medicine and in the Division of Biostatistics in the PHS department. The successful candidate will oversee and develop TRIAD, collaborate with biomedical researchers, support and develop grant proposals, advise graduate students, and perform methodological research, and will have the opportunity to teach in the Biostatistics Ph.D. emphasis in the PHS Ph.D. program. We are particularly interested in candidates who possess the research skills and experience required to successfully lead multi‑disciplinary research teams within the institution and in national and international research networks as well as pursue independent and collaborative methodological research in Biostatistics. Methodological interest and experience are desired, but not limited to, the following areas: (1) design and analysis of observational studies, (2) design and analysis of clinical trials, (3) causal inference, (4) implementation science methodology, (5) data integration, (6) machine learning, (7) ’omics (e.g., metabolomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics), (8) social/behavioral science, and (9) longitudinal and multilevel data analysis. Appointed faculty will have exceptional opportunities to conduct cutting‑edge research in biostatistics, collaborate with multidisciplinary faculty, and work in close partnership with health care systems and community‑based agencies both in the Salt Lake City area and state of Utah but also around the United States and globally. The University of Utah offers highly competitive salary and start‑up packages and exceptional benefits. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the start date is flexible. The job announcement will remain active until the positions are filled. Minimum Qualifications A Ph.D. in biostatistics or a related discipline is required, as well as a demonstrated excellence in collaborative and methodological research. Post‑doctoral training and/or experience is desired. Required Materials Letter of interest (cover letter) CV Research statement Teaching statement Exemplar publication or pre‑pub that highlights expertise in biostatistics Questions about this position should be directed to the search committee chair: Daniel Scharfstein . About The Division Of Biostatistics This Division of Biostatistics is a tight knit entrepreneurial group of six faculty. We address important biomedical problems through deep collaborations with researchers at the University of Utah and beyond. We have deep connections with the Division of Epidemiology (within the Department of Internal Medicine), the Utah Data Coordinating Center (within the Division of Pediatric Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics), the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Veterans Administration, and Intermountain Healthcare. We conduct methodological research that is motivated by the problems we encounter during our collaborations. We have an internationally diverse PhD student body, who receive training both in the classroom and through mentored collaboration. We are surrounded by large databases that can be used to address important scientific questions. For example The Utah Population Database (UPBD) is the world's largest resource for tracking diseases in families, with more than 11 million people in large, multigenerational pedigrees, linked to tens of millions of medically relevant records. The Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) contains data extracted from many of the institution's disparate source systems, including patient, visit, clinical, operational, financial, and research data. It contains data on more than 2.5 million patients. The Veterans Administration (VA) Informatics and Computing Infrastructure (VINCI) provides researchers with access to all VA electronic health data and additional unique data sets, covering over 9 million Veterans, and high‑powered cloud computing infrastructure and tools. About The PHS Department The Department of Population Health Sciences is a hub for education, investigation, and methodological expertise in population health. Our faculty are diverse and form three Divisions — Cancer Population Sciences, Biostatistics, and Health Services Innovation & Research. Faculty, staff, and students engage in research, education, and community activities to promote patient‑centered healthcare and the delivery of evidence‑based health innovations that improve population health and reduce health disparities within our community and beyond. Through high impact research, we strive to contribute to a world where all individuals—regardless of socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, gender identity or sexual orientation—have the opportunity to enjoy the highest attainable standard of health. The department is highly interdisciplinary, collaborative, and innovative, and we seek faculty who will thrive in this environment. About the Utah Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and TRIAD As an awardee of an NCRR Clinical and Translation Science Award (CTSA), the University of Utah is part of a national consortium of medical research centers working together to improve the conduct of biomedical research. The CTSI is the University of Utah's research resource supported through this program. The CTSI builds on the University's strengths in genetics and bioinformatics to translate promising bench science into practices that improve human health. The Utah CTSI, formerly the General Clinical Research Center, has been continuously funded since 1965. The CTSI builds on the strengths of its partner organizations including U of U Health, VASLCHCS, Utah Department of Health, and Intermountain Healthcare. The institute serves as an academic home for clinical and translational research and supports the development of the next generation of innovative translational investigators. Within the Utah CTSI, the TRIAD Team provides methodological and data analytic support to investigators looking to perform research seeking to improve the health of patient populations. TRIAD's integrated cores include the 1) Study Design and Biostatistics Center; 2) Cancer Biostatistics Core; 3) Survey and Measurement Core; 4) Health Economics Core; 5) Systematic Review Core; 6) Qualitative Research Core; 7) Dissemination and Implementation Science Core. Members within each core apply state‑of‑the‑art research methodology in their respective areas and are available to collaborate with clinical and translational researchers throughout the Utah CTSI partner institutions. The Study Design and Biostatistics Center within TRIAD includes approximately 30 biostatisticians and epidemiologists and provides biostatistical support for more than 500 projects each year. The SDBC also develops novel statistical techniques and software for biomedical research and teaches the principles of biostatistics in the CTSI Master of Science in Clinical Investigation program. The membership of the SDBC specializes in a wide range of biostatistical areas including the design of clinical trials and observational studies; longitudinal analysis; linear and nonlinear mixed models; survival analysis; multivariate methods; modern causal inference; methods for patient‑centered research; Bayesian modeling; statistical genetics and genomics; computational statistics; and diagnostic testing. SDBC members collaborate throughout the research process, assisting with clarification of research hypotheses and study aims; optimizing study design and outcome measurements; providing sample size/power calculations and statistical analysis plans; conducting statistical analyses; interpreting analysis results; and grant and scientific manuscript writing.
