Maintenance Technician IIThe City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician II to work on the Landscape crew in the Transportation Division to perform skilled work in landscape maintenance of rights of way and in the operation of Ventrac and other commercial mowing equipment.This position makes landscape repairs and renovations to city rights of way and corridors, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding. Responsibilities also include servicing and making minor repairs and adjustments on landscape equipment.The role requires operation of heavy and light equipment for snow removal and assistance with special events and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends as needed. The position also operates trucks with both automatic and manual transmission and maintains accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre trip sheets.A high school diploma or general education degree (GED), along with two to three years of related experience and or training in the assigned trades area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required. Certifications for Registered Technician Pesticide Applicator and a Class B CDL with Tanker endorsement must be obtained within 12 months of hire. This is a non-exempt position.Summary: Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include the following depending on area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned:Operates tractor trailer or other heavy construction equipmentOperates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, crane and chipper, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces and street/construction repairServices and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipmentWhen not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operatorsOperates heavy and light equipment in snow removalOperates truck, including automatic and manual transmissionInspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignmentMay perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipmentMaintains accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheetsPerforms major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systemsRepairs catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocksPerforms work in the resurfacing of concrete walkways (floor polishing) in city buildings.Performs some major and all minor motor repairs and replacement work such as: cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hose, and packing water pumps; refacing valves and seats, grinding, assembling, and adjusting them; installing rings and bearings and making proper adjustments; and overhauling/repairing carburetors and clutches, brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, hydraulic system components including pumps and cylinders; and tuning motorsMakes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and soddingAssists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as neededMay be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markingsKnowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices.Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards.Safety first. Places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements.Follows established safety procedures.May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their dutiesMaintenance Tech II (Sign Shop) Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:Discuss job requirements and receive detailed instructions from the supervisorInspects sign and marking installations in progress to ensure conformance with current MUTCD standardsRequisitions of necessary equipment and materials in daily operationMaintains accurate shop daily operation log sheets and checklists using the VueWorks systemSets up work zones as needed to ensure according to the Virginia Work Area Protection ManualInstalls and repairs traffic signs and pavement markings throughout the CityAssists crew with laying down hot applied thermoplasticInstalls, repairs, and maintains street painting such as double yellow and skipsAssists the sign fabricator with making signsSets up work zones as needed according to the Virginia Work Area Protection ManualAssists the shop supervisor during emergency events and works with police, fire/EMS, and other governmental functionsParticipates in the City of Roanoke snow removal operationsAny other task above and beyond as deemed necessary by the Sign Shop SupervisorSupervisory Responsibilities: None.Qualifications:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. May require Playground Inspection Certification to be acquired after hire. May require journey-level licensure in an area of skilled trades.Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to walk, climb or balance, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles.
