Embedded Software Engineer

Job Title: Embedded Software Engineer (Engineer Software 3)

Job Description

This role supports EA-18G programs, developing embedded software for Growler Block 1 and Growler Block 2 initiatives. As a member of the EA-18G software team, you design, implement, and maintain real-time system software that directly supports mission-critical capabilities. The position is primarily on-site at Naval Air Warfare Center Point Mugu and at an associated engineering office, working closely with cross-functional teams in a highly technical and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded real-time system software for EA-18G Growler Block 1 and Block 2 programs.

• Work in an Agile environment as an active member of a scrum team, participating in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.

• Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve software and system defects to ensure reliability, performance, and compliance with program requirements.

• Collaborate closely with customer stakeholders, internal engineering sites, and multidisciplinary teams to define requirements and deliver integrated solutions.

• Participate in and contribute to peer reviews, critical milestone reviews, and technical interchange meetings to ensure software quality and design integrity.

• Use project-specific tools such as Rational ClearCase, ClearQuest, and DOORS to manage configuration, change requests, and requirements.

• Leverage modern software development tools including Git, Bitbucket, Jira, and Confluence to manage source control, track work, and document technical decisions.

• Develop software using languages such as C, C++, C#, Python, and Ada for embedded and application-level components.

• Implement and integrate software on Green Hills Integrity RTOS, as well as Windows and Linux operating systems.

• Contribute to full software life cycle activities, including requirements analysis, design, coding, integration, testing, and maintenance, particularly on large-scale, formal DoD programs.

• Support Electronic Warfare system development and design efforts by implementing and integrating embedded software components.

• Apply object-oriented software development principles and best practices to create robust, maintainable, and scalable solutions.

• Function effectively as part of an integrated team, sharing knowledge, supporting teammates, and aligning work with program objectives.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in a STEM field with at least 3 years of relevant experience.

• Hands-on experience with higher-order programming languages such as C, C++, and C#.

• Strong knowledge of object-oriented software development principles and practices.

• Proven ability to function as an effective member of an integrated, cross-disciplinary engineering team.

• Experience using version control systems such as Git, Bitbucket, and ClearCase.

• Experience developing embedded software, including microcontroller-based and embedded Linux environments.

• Proficiency in real-time operating systems (RTOS), particularly Green Hills Integrity RTOS.

• Experience with Agile software development methodologies.

• Working knowledge of Python for scripting, automation, or application development.

• Ability to use requirements and configuration management tools such as Rational ClearCase, ClearQuest, and DOORS.

• Eligibility to work on defense-related programs, including the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance or higher, with interim Secret acceptable.

• Experience across the full software development life cycle on large-scale, formal Department of Defense programs.

• Experience programming in Ada for embedded or safety-critical systems.

• Experience programming in C and C++ for embedded and real-time applications.

• Experience in real-time embedded software development, including performance optimization and resource-constrained design.

• Hands-on experience working in Agile teams, using tools such as Jira and Confluence for task tracking and documentation.

• Electronic Warfare system development and design experience, including integration of embedded software into complex EW systems.

• Experience with embedded Linux environments and microcontroller-based systems.

• Familiarity with modern software engineering practices, including peer reviews, continuous integration, and configuration management.

Work Environment

This position is primarily on-site at Naval Air Warfare Center Point Mugu and an associated engineering office, working in a structured, mission-focused environment. You operate within Agile scrum teams that use tools such as Git, Bitbucket, Jira, Confluence, Rational ClearCase, ClearQuest, and DOORS to manage source code, requirements, and project tasks. The technical environment includes development on Green Hills Integrity RTOS, Windows, and Linux platforms, with a focus on embedded systems, Electronic Warfare applications, and formal DoD program standards. The work setting emphasizes collaboration, regular technical reviews, and close coordination with multidisciplinary engineering teams. Attire is typically professional and appropriate for a defense and laboratory-style engineering environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of El Segundo, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $100.00 - $125.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
