Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit Duration: 15 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required License: Active nursing license required Certifications: BLS, ACLS preferred, CCRN a plus Must-Have: 2 years of CVICU experience or more is required. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment. Strong assessment skills, critical thinking, communication, and organization. Proficiency in interpreting cardiac strips. Experience with titrating various medications. Description: This unit has 20 private, monitored beds with varying nurse-patient ratios depending on patient acuity. Common patient populations include post-open heart surgical patients, CABG, valve procedures, and those experiencing unstable angina or STEMI. Equipment commonly used includes IABPs, Impellas, Swan Ganz, ECMO, external pacemakers, and CRRT. Nurses are expected to manage ventilated patients and provide care for overflow patients from other ICUs. VAD placement and heart transplant patients will soon be part of the patient population. Nurses must be able to independently manage complex cardiovascular cases without assistance. Weekly scheduling requires working every other weekend and participation in holiday staffing. A charge nurse and house supervisor are available 24/7 to support the nursing team. Respiratory therapists are present around the clock to assist with ventilators and other breathing equipment. Monitor techs will assist with telemetry; however, RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting cardiac strips. Nurses may be required to float to different levels of care within the facility. The dress code requires scrubs that are appropriate in appearance; specific colors are not mandated. This unit necessitates proficiency in managing a variety of cardiovascular-related interventions and care.
