Position Overview

Duke Energy is seeking an experienced Telecom Engineer IV / Senior Telecom Power Engineer to join its IT Telecommunications Engineering team. This role is responsible for the engineering, design, implementation, testing, and support of critical AC and DC power systems supporting telecommunications infrastructure across the enterprise.

The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in 48V DC power systems, UPS systems, battery plant systems, battery monitoring solutions, grounding systems, and backup power infrastructure . This position plays a key role in ensuring reliable telecom network operations by delivering highly available, resilient, and cost-effective power solutions.

This is a hands-on engineering position requiring strong technical expertise, independent decision-making, and collaboration with operations, installation, maintenance, and network engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

Telecom Power Engineering

• Design, engineer, and deliver AC and DC power solutions supporting telecommunications infrastructure.
• Develop and implement solutions involving:
  • 48V DC Power Plants
  • UPS Systems
  • Battery Monitoring Systems
  • Environmental Monitoring Systems
  • Alarm Monitoring Systems
  • Grounding and Bonding Systems
  • Backup Generator Systems
• Ensure solutions meet reliability, availability, performance, and business requirements.
• Perform power system analysis, equipment selection, and engineering calculations.

Engineering & Project Delivery

• Develop detailed Engineering Job Packages (EJPs), including:
  • Equipment and material lists
  • Installation instructions
  • Network diagrams
  • Power schematics
  • Shelf layouts
  • Technical documentation
• Prepare project cost estimates, work orders, and economic evaluations.
• Coordinate implementation activities with engineering, field services, installation, maintenance, and operations teams.
• Support project lifecycles from planning and design through testing, deployment, and turnover.

Operations & Technical Support

• Provide Tier III engineering support for complex telecom power issues.
• Assist Network Operations Center (NOC), installation personnel, and maintenance teams with troubleshooting and problem resolution.
• Develop support procedures and documentation to improve first- and second-level operational support capabilities.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve reliability, efficiency, and supportability.

Collaboration & Innovation

• Partner with telecommunications engineers, network teams, field technicians, and business stakeholders.
• Participate in Agile planning, Kanban workflows, and engineering review meetings.
• Maintain expertise in emerging telecommunications and power technologies.
• Contribute to network automation initiatives through scripting and programming where appropriate.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

One of the following:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related discipline plus 6+ years of telecom power engineering experience , OR
• Associate Degree with 10+ years of direct telecom power engineering experience , OR
• High School Diploma with 15+ years of direct telecom power engineering experience

Technical Requirements

• Experience designing and supporting:
  • 240/120V AC power systems
  • 48V DC power systems
  • UPS systems
  • DC battery plant systems
  • Battery monitoring solutions
  • Backup generator systems
• Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC).
• Knowledge of grounding and bonding standards for telecom shelters and towers.
• Basic understanding of:
  • TCP/IP networking
  • Routing and switching technologies
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite:
  • Excel
  • Word
  • PowerPoint
  • Visio
  • SharePoint
  • Teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Utility industry experience.
• Experience working in Agile environments.
• Knowledge of Agile, Kanban, Jira, and related methodologies.
• Experience with ServiceNow.
• Experience with engineering documentation systems such as Fusion or CASTPro.
• Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in North Carolina.
• Engineering Fundamentals (FE) certification.
