Adjunct Faculty, English

Purpose and Scope Adjunct teaching faculty are responsible for providing planning, development, and instruction of courses that meet curriculum objectives and support the educational environment of the college and community. Classes are offered in a part‑time capacity on a semester‑by‑semester basis, with a maximum of five courses per academic year. Essential Job Functions Teach English courses at a variety of times and locations. Create engaging lessons that promote student involvement and application of the material. Submit required college reports and forms in a timely manner. Utilize a course syllabus for each course, following established institutional guidelines. Meet with and advise students before or after class or by appointment, electronic communication, or other appropriate methods. Evaluate students to measure progress toward course objectives and inform students timely of their progress. Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and the community. Attend meetings, trainings, and orientations as required. Perform other reasonable related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Mastery of course content. Demonstrated leadership skills with a collaborative, teamwork, and facilitation style. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills. Ability to appreciate alternative viewpoints and work effectively with a wide variety of people. Interest in interdisciplinary teaching, service learning, learning technologies, course development, and adult learning methodologies, including collaborative learning, learning communities, and distance learning. Commitment to academic excellence, exceptional service, and a dynamic climate for life‑long learning. Ability to develop and implement instructional approaches such as service learning/civic engagement, learning communities, and the effective use of technology. Ability to use effective strategies to engage students in their learning. Physical Abilities The work is sedentary; typical duties include sitting, walking, standing, bending, carrying light items such as papers and books, and possibly driving. No special physical demands are required. Work Schedule and Conditions Use a PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment. Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out functions of the position. Work is performed in a climate‑controlled classroom and/or lab environment with minimal exposure to safety hazards. Hours vary by class time; instructors must be available to students outside of class instruction. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in English, literature, creative writing, or a related field with at least 18 graduate hours in English, literature, creative writing, or rhetoric‑composition studies. Salary $55.44 per contact hour.
