The Safety Manager supports a battery augmentation project that expands a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This role oversees safety on a construction project from the general contractor's perspective, focusing on auditing, safety briefings, site oversight, coordination, and coaching. The position emphasizes collaboration with subcontractors, helping them succeed through guidance rather than policing, and plays a key role in maintaining a safe and efficient electric transmission and distribution construction environment.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all safety activities on construction sites from the general contractor's perspective, ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards and procedures.
• Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) augmentation project and related construction areas.
• Lead and deliver safety briefings, toolbox talks, and ongoing safety communications to field crews and subcontractors.
• Provide site oversight for daily construction activities, monitoring work practices and identifying potential hazards or unsafe conditions.
• Coordinate safety efforts with construction teams and subcontractors to align on safety expectations, plans, and corrective actions.
• Coach and mentor subcontractors and field personnel to improve safety behaviors and performance, focusing on collaboration rather than policing.
• Support the development and implementation of safety policies, procedures, and job-specific safety plans for substation and transmission line construction.
• Verify that workers have appropriate training, certifications, and personal protective equipment for the tasks they perform.
• Document safety observations, incidents, and near-misses, and support incident investigations and follow-up actions as needed.
• Walk the construction site regularly to perform observations, provide real-time feedback, and ensure safe work practices are maintained.
• Promote a positive safety culture that encourages open communication, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with project leadership to address schedule pressures while maintaining safety standards, especially during compressed work periods.

Essential Skills

• 2-3 years of professional safety management experience, preferably in the electric transmission and distribution construction sector.
• Experience and understanding of substation construction practices and safety requirements.
• Experience and understanding of transmission line construction activities and associated hazards.
• OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification.
• Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with construction teams and subcontractors.
• Ability to walk and navigate active construction sites for extended periods to perform observations and oversight.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) construction experience is a significant plus.
• CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) or other professional safety certification is a plus.
• Background in utility construction and familiarity with substation and transmission line work environments.
• Strong coaching and mentoring skills, with a focus on helping teams improve rather than enforcing through policing.
• Effective communication skills for delivering safety briefings and coordinating with diverse field teams.

Work Environment

This role is based on active construction sites supporting Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) augmentation and electric transmission and distribution projects. The Safety Manager relocates to project locations for durations typically ranging from 2 months up to, in rare cases, about 1 year. Most projects operate on schedules of 5 to 6 ten-hour shifts per week, and when schedules are compressed, work may extend to 7 ten-hour shifts. The environment involves outdoor and substation/transmission line construction settings, requiring frequent walking on uneven terrain, working around heavy equipment, and close collaboration with field crews and subcontractors in a fast-paced, schedule-driven atmosphere.

This is a Contract position based out of Youngtown, AZ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $45.00 – $75.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
