OB-Maternal/Child Clinical – Adjunct Instructor, School of Nursing The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) seeks an adjunct instructor to help prepare undergraduate nursing students for the BSN curriculum and the NCLEX-RN exam through clinical instruction in skills lab, simulation, and affiliated clinical organizations. Summary / Objectives Faculty are expected to teach undergraduate courses (including evening, weekend, or hybrid), advise students, document student learning, serve on faculty committees, attend meetings and convocations, and support student learning through active learning strategies. Essential Functions Foster a culture of inclusive excellence through authentic relationships with students as educator and mentor. Teach assigned courses per catalog descriptions and academic specifications. Prepare and distribute course syllabus and maintain records on all students. Submit grade reports on time and assess student‑learning outcomes. Collaborate with nursing faculty to deliver high‑quality instruction. Deliver content in online, in‑person, and/or hybrid formats. Supervise students at clinicals and supervise 2‑3 sessions of on‑campus teaching in lab and simulation. Perform other duties as assigned. Clinical Site Responsibilities Become familiar with and comply with agency policies and procedures. Complete required agency training (e.g., electronic health records, HIPAA, medication administration). Orient staff nurses to student level and specific learning outcomes. Encourage nurses to communicate immediately with faculty regarding student performance. Communicate with unit nurse manager on a regular basis, including post‑rotation communication. School of Nursing Responsibilities Meet with lead course faculty each semester to orient the course and review student learning outcomes. Confirm student assignments and congruence with theory content. Review grading policies and Nursing Faculty and Student Handbook. Provide feedback on site adequacy and student evaluations to lead faculty. Complete simulation orientation and debrief training with Simulation Lab Coordinator. Participate in ongoing communication with lead faculty about instructional issues and student progress. Act as a professional role model and representative of SUNO SON. Perform reasonable assigned tasks to help students meet course outcomes and program goals. Student Instruction Responsibilities Direct, instruct, and guide students in the clinical setting. Assign students weekly to selected patients based on learning needs. Assist students in collecting objective and subjective data for patient health status. Engage students in individualized instruction in observation, assessment, decision‑making, and health teaching. Facilitate development of critical thinking, technical, and professional communication skills. Supervise medication administration and delegate nursing functions as appropriate. Provide written instructions for injury or illness situations. Participate in skills lab and simulation as needed. Hold pre‑ and post‑clinical conferences and complete evaluations. Grade written assignments, maintain accurate records, and return graded work promptly. Communicate progress and refer students to college services as necessary. Maintain confidentiality, FERPA privacy policies, and comply with institutional quality standards. Competencies Demonstrate sensitivity to students from diverse backgrounds. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Licensed registered nurse in Louisiana. Competent practitioner with a Bachelor’s or progressing toward a Master of Science in Nursing. Minimum 3 years clinical nursing experience in Obstetrics. Experience with ATI e‑books, CANVAS LMS, and electronic teaching resources. Background check clearance, current American Heart Association CPR training, and unencumbered Louisiana RN license. Current immunization records (tuberculin skin test, COVID‑19, influenza, etc.) per program policy. Knowledge of patient medications, treatments, and diagnoses for teaching critical‑thinking skills. Organized and able to manage student situations and communicate with faculty, students, and staff. Preferred Education and Experience Academic preparation and teaching experience in nursing education. Teaching experience in online and/or in‑person formats. Advanced computer skills, including course management systems. Experience with electronic health records and online meeting systems.
