Introduction
The Prince William County Department of Social Services, Homeless Services Division, is seeking four (4) Temporary Senior Human Services Caseworkers to serve as Shift Supervisors within our Emergency Shelters. These positions provide direct supervision, operational oversight, and leadership support at two (2) separate shelter locations serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

• Hilda M. Barg Homeless Prevention Center - Two Shifts

  • Assigned to the 12:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. shift

The Ferlazzo Emergency Shelter and Hilda M. Barg Homeless Prevention Center are 24-hour facilities operating seven (7) days a week and serving approximately 50 single adults & nine family households experiencing homelessness. Both Shelters provide emergency shelter and supportive services to the households served through a housing-focused, trauma-informed service model.

These temporary supervisory positions are critical to strengthening shelter operations during evening and overnight hours, supporting frontline staff, promoting accountability, ensuring policy compliance, and maintaining safe, respectful, and supportive environments for residents. The selected candidates will report to the Human Services Managers and serve as key members of the Shelter Management Team.

If you have experience in homeless services, shelter operations, crisis intervention, staff supervision, and working with vulnerable populations, and you are prepared to provide leadership during non-traditional hours when senior management may not be routinely on-site, we encourage you to apply.

About This Role: As a Shift Supervisor, you will provide direct supervision to Human Services Caseworker Associates and other assigned staff during your designated shift. You will oversee daily shelter operations, ensure adherence to program policies and procedures, monitor service delivery, and respond to resident, staff, and facility-related concerns.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Providing direct supervision, coaching, guidance, and performance oversight to assigned staff.
• Ensuring adequate staffing coverage and effective shift transitions.
• Monitoring resident safety, conducting facility walkthroughs, and overseeing shelter security practices.
• Reviewing shift documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
• Responding to resident concerns, behavioral incidents, crises, emergencies, and facility-related issues.
• Supporting staff in conflict resolution, de-escalation, crisis intervention, and problem-solving efforts.
• Coordinating with community partners, volunteers, public safety agencies, and other stakeholders as needed.
• Ensuring consistent application of shelter rules, program expectations, and Housing First principles.
• Serving as the primary management representative during assigned hours and exercising sound judgment in operational decision-making.

During evening and overnight hours, the Shift Supervisor serves as the on-site leader, responsible for maintaining operational continuity and addressing issues in real time. Whether managing resident concerns, responding to emergencies, addressing staff performance issues, or handling facility-related challenges, the Shift Supervisor must demonstrate professionalism, sound judgment, and the ability to make informed, independent decisions.

The successful candidates will maintain a visible presence throughout their shifts, conduct regular walkthroughs, support staff development, monitor service quality, and ensure the shelter environment remains safe, structured, and responsive to resident needs.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience in a human or social services-related field
PREFERENCES:

• 4 or more years of experience in the following areas:
• Providing customer service in the workplace
• Managing crisis situations and independently making decisions
• Working with people experiencing homelessness
• Working in a homeless shelter
• 3 or more years of experience in the following areas:
• Management and supervision
• Working with volunteers and donors
• General knowledge of being trauma-informed
• Certifications in CPR, First Aid, de-escalation, and crisis Intervention
• Experience working with individuals experiencing trauma, mental health concerns, substance use concerns, physical disabilities, or other significant barriers

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Resource/foster parents for youth in the Prince William foster-care program may not be employed by the Prince William Department of Social Services. Resource/foster parents for youth from other localities are welcome to apply.
• All DSS staff are required to provide emergency human services work, including staffing emergency shelters in the event of a community disaster.
• Candidates must pass criminal history, child protective services, and DMV background checks.
• Staff in this position must possess a valid driver's license and be eligible to drive for work.
• Staff in this position are not eligible to telework.
• Staff in this position will be required to attend meetings and/or trainings outside of their regular work schedule.
• Staff in this position must be able to report to work in inclement weather or other states of emergency.

Work Schedule: These are temporary full-time positions, Monday through Friday. Four vacancies are available across two locations and two shifts:

Hiring Salary Range : $39.01 to $53.68
