Facilities Mechanic
Performs intermediate skilled trades work maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting a variety of facilities systems and Town equipment. Work performed involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining mechanical, electrical, structural, and other facility applicable components across all Town-owned facilities. Facility Mechanics may work on HVAC systems, lighting/fixtures, plumbing, traffic lights/signals, and other specialized building equipment/systems. Work is performed under minimal supervision.
Facilities Mechanic I position duties include, but are not limited to:
- Knowledge & Safety: Working knowledge of preventative maintenance and basic repairs. Perform routine maintenance and inspections on variety of facility equipment, signs, and traffic signals. Diagnose and repair standard mechanical and electrical issues.
- Manual/General Labor: Assists with minor electrical diagnosis and repairs. Responsible for ensuring clean Town equipment; maintain shop cleanliness. Includes water and wastewater treatment plant, pump stations and wells.
- Equipment Operations: Familiarity with applicable diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Administration/Compliance: Knowledge of policies related to facilities maintenance operations. Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety practices. Maintain accurate records of maintenance, parts usage, time, and materials.
- Additional Tasks: Assists as needed to accomplish a variety of Facilities related tasks.
Facilities Mechanic II position duties include Level I duties in addition to, but not limited to:
- Knowledge & Safety: Advanced mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Experience with diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical issues in a wide variety of various facility equipment, signs, and traffic signals.
- Manual/General Labor: Diagnose and repair various types of specialty equipment including but not limited to traffic lights, signs, plumbing systems, etc. Inspect, repair, replace, and mount electrical components and fixtures. Perform specialized tasks such as HVAC diagnosis, treatment pumps and associated equipment.
- Equipment Operations: Extensive experience with applicable diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Administration/Compliance: Knowledge of policies related to facilities maintenance operations. Knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety practices. Maintain accurate records of maintenance, parts usage, time, and materials.
- Administrative: Assists in the training and mentoring of Mechanic I. Assist with facilities purchasing and disposal.
Facilities Mechanic III position duties include Level I and II duties in addition to, but not limited to:
- Knowledge & Safety: Advanced mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting skills. Diagnoses and repairs major component systems of buildings, roofing systems, electrical panels, and high voltage 1ph/3ph systems, low voltage, three-phase, signposts and structural bases, traffic light systems, and complex computer-controlled systems. Additional knowledge of control wiring, VFD Programming, and troubleshooting.
- Administration/Compliance: Develop and implement maintenance procedures and standards. Assists with the daily operations of the fleet maintenance department. Assists the Fleet & Facilities manager with facilities budget management and resources control. Coordinate cross-departmental facility's needs. Negotiate with vendors and suppliers.
- People Operations: May serve as the Team Lead.
Requirements
Education & Experience
Level I - Grade 8 - High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree - Minimum of three (3) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various facility equipment, signs, and signals.
Level II - Grade 9 - High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree - Minimum of six (6) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various facility equipment, signs, and traffic signals.
Level III - Grade 10 - High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree - Minimum of nine (9) years of experience of maintenance and repair on various facility equipment, signs, and traffic signals. May serve as a Team Lead; must have minimum of two (2) years of prior supervisory experience to be considered for Team Lead.
Certification & Licenses
All Levels
- Valid Virginia (VA) Driver's License - Must have upon hire. If relocating to VA, a valid VA drivers' license is required to be obtained within one (1) year from date of hire.
- FEMA Incident Command Systems (ICS) - Must have taken or take the following FEMA online courses: IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, IS-800 within six (6) months of hire.
- VDOT Flagger Certification - Must obtain and maintain within one (1) year from date of hire.
- Basic Work Zone Certification - Must obtain and maintain within one (1) year from date of hire. May also have VDOT certifications that are equivalent to Basic Work Zone.
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician II - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within six (6) months from date of hire.
Level I
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician II - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one (1) year from date of hire.
- OSHA 10 - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within three (3) months from date of hire.
Level II - Includes level I requirements as applicable
- Class B Commercial Driver's License CDL - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one (1) year from date of hire.
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician II - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one (1) year from date of hire.
- VDOT Intermediate Work Zone - Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one (1) year of date of hire.
- OSHA 40 - Must have certificate of completion or must completed training within one (1) year from date of hire.
- EPA UST Operator License Class B - Minimum licensure. Must have or must be able to obtain and maintain within one (1) year from date of hire.
Level III - Includes level I requirements as applicable
- Leadership Training - Must have Leadership/Team Building Training certificate from VRSA or other reputable vendor as approved by Human Capital. Must have or maintain and obtain within six (6) months from the date began serving as a team lead.

- Ability to operate a computer, and other facility equipment needed to perform job duties, proficiency in various software, including Microsoft Office suite; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
