OAG - Child Support | Assistant Attorney General I-IV | 26-0351

Overview Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) represent the State of Texas in judicial and administrative family law proceedings to establish paternity, obtain court orders for financial support and health care coverage for children, and enforce and modify child support orders. The Child Support Division (CSD) encourages responsible parenting by promoting the involvement of both parents in their children’s lives and ensuring children receive the support they need and deserve. CSD staff collaborate with other state agencies and community organizations to serve Texas families. AAGs have significant trial court experience, negotiating skills, and expertise in family law practice areas. They enjoy a healthy work‑life balance within a collegial statewide team. Responsibilities Represent the State of Texas at legal proceedings to locate, establish, enforce, modify, or terminate court orders for child support and medical support. Represent the State of Texas in administrative hearings. Provide legal advice, consultation, and technical assistance to the Child Support Program. Develop and deliver training. Perform related work as assigned. Maintain relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions. Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed‑upon work schedule. Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive and/or protected information. Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those pertaining to ethics and integrity. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas. Knowledge of Family Law and the Texas Family Code. Skill in legal writing, mediation, negotiation, trial advocacy, preparing opinions, conducting investigations, legal research, and using a personal computer. Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, meeting deadlines, effective oral and written communication, exercising sound judgment and decision making. Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback, work cooperatively with others, provide excellent customer service, and work in person at the designated OAG work location. Ability to arrange personal transportation for business‑related travel. Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed and in compliance with the FLSA. Ability to lift and relocate 30 lbs. Ability to travel (including overnight travel) up to 25%. For AAG II–IV, one or more additional years of full‑time licensed attorney experience in related fields. Preferred Qualifications Two years of experience handling Family Law cases. Jury trial experience. Experience handling a high‑volume legal practice. Proficient reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.
