Security Technician IV

Lead Technician 

Reports to: Project Manager   |   Typically supervises: 2–8 field technicians   |   FLSA: Non-exempt, hourly

Overview

The Security Technician IV (Lead Technician) is an advanced technical and field leadership position responsible for overseeing complex security installations, directing field crews, maintaining quality and productivity, troubleshooting advanced system issues, and supporting system commissioning and client turnover.

This position works closely with the Project Manager and serves as a primary technical resource in the field, coordinating with general contractors, clients, other trades, manufacturers, and other project personnel to ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and according to project requirements

Key Responsibilities

1. Project & Field Leadership

• Plan and oversee daily and weekly installation goals, manpower assignments, and field priorities.
• Supervise and provide technical direction to crews of approximately 4–8 technicians, depending on project requirements.
• Monitor field productivity, workmanship, safety, project schedules, and completion of assigned scope.
• Review drawings, specifications, risers, submittals, and field conditions to plan installation activities.
• Identify scope conflicts, material shortages, access issues, delays, and potential change conditions and communicate them to the Project Manager.
• Train and mentor less-experienced technicians and reinforce JLA installation and quality standards.

2. Advanced System Integration & Troubleshooting

• Lead installation, configuration, testing, and integration of access control, CCTV/VMS, intrusion, and related systems.
• Configure and troubleshoot security devices, including network addressing and device communication.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting involving cabling, power, hardware, firmware, network connectivity, configuration, and system integration.
• Perform or assist with system commissioning, functional testing, and manufacturer-specific setup within demonstrated qualifications.
• Coordinate system interfaces with IT/network, electrical, door hardware, fire alarm, and other affected trades.

3. Quality Control, Documentation & Closeout

• Perform field QA/QC inspections to ensure installations meet JLA standards, project documents, applicable codes, and manufacturer requirements.
• Maintain complete and accurate field redlines and as-built documentation.
• Maintain required testing, device, commissioning, and progress documentation, and provide field updates to Project Managers.
• Identify and coordinate correction of deficiencies and punch-list items.
• Assist with project closeout packages, testing records, O&M information, warranties, and final documentation, and support customer training and turnover.

4. Client, GC & Trade Coordination

• Attend project meetings, coordination meetings, site walks, inspections, and commissioning activities as required.
• Coordinate field activities with the GC, client, IT personnel, other trades, manufacturers, and project team.
• Address routine on-site technical concerns and escalate scope, contractual, pricing, or significant schedule matters to the Project Manager.
• Participate in client system walkthroughs, demonstrations, training, and final turnover..

5. Safety, Productivity & Project Awareness

• Ensure assigned crews follow JLA and project-specific safety requirements, including proper use of PPE, ladders, lifts, tools, and testing equipment.
• Monitor manpower, materials, equipment, and field productivity, and communicate concerns that could affect project schedule or budget.
• Help minimize preventable rework, material waste, equipment damage, and unnecessary labor.
• Maintain accountability for assigned JLA tools, testing equipment, materials, and company property.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to climb ladders and lifts, work at heights, and access ceilings, mechanical rooms, and other confined or non-climate-controlled spaces; must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made for otherwise qualified individuals with disabilities.

Qualifications

• Typically 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in electronic security, structured cabling, system integration, or related work.
• Demonstrated experience leading field crews and complex installations.
• Advanced ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, risers, system diagrams, and submittals.
• Advanced knowledge of security system installation, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
• Working knowledge of BICSI practices, NEC, ANSI/TIA standards, and IP networking applicable to assigned systems.
• Strong leadership, communication, organization, troubleshooting, and documentation skills.
• Ability to work independently with limited day-to-day supervision.

Pay Scale

• Hourly Wage: $32–$42/hr DOE.
