Join Our Team as an Adoption Counselor at the Humane Society of Sumter County!

The Humane Society of Sumter County is looking for a dedicated and compassionate Adoption Counselor to help connect shelter animals with their forever homes. Located in Lake Panasoffkee, FL, we are a small but mighty organization committed to caring for and adopting animals in Sumter County. What You’ll Do as an Adoption CounselorAs an Adoption Counselor, you’ll play a vital role in helping animals find loving homes while providing a positive experience for adopters. Your responsibilities will include:
Adoption Services- Welcome and guide potential adopters, ensuring a warm and professional experience.
- Counsel adopters on animal personalities, needs, and behaviors to help them find the perfect match.
- Facilitate meet-and-greets and adoption interviews.
- Process adoption applications and complete all necessary paperwork.
- Educate adopters on responsible pet ownership, training, and veterinary care.
- Assist with adoption events and community outreach activities.
- Ensure animals are clean, comfortable, and well cared for.
- Assist with feeding, cleaning, walking, and socializing animals.
- Monitor animal health and behavior, reporting any concerns promptly.
- Maintain clean and organized adoption areas.
- Help create accurate and appealing adoption profiles for animals.
- Represent the Humane Society in a compassionate and professional manner.
- Answer questions from the public about adoptions and available animals.
- Educate the community about spay/neuter programs, vaccinations, and animal welfare.
- Build positive relationships with adopters, volunteers, and community partners.
- Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and foster families to ensure the best outcomes for animals.
- Communicate effectively about animal behavior, medical needs, and adoption prospects.
- Assist with general shelter operations as needed—teamwork is key in our small but dedicated organization.
We’re searching for someone who shares our passion for animal welfare and can bring the following skills and qualifications to the role:
Required- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 1 year of experience in animal care, customer service, or a related field.
- Genuine compassion for animals and a commitment to our mission.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions regarding animal placement.
- Basic computer skills and attention to detail for accurate record-keeping.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in a shelter, rescue, veterinary, or animal-care setting.
- Knowledge of dog and cat behavior and basic animal handling.
- Familiarity with adoption or shelter-management software.
- Experience working with volunteers or in community outreach.
This role involves standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. You’ll work in a busy shelter environment with animals of varying sizes and temperaments, both indoors and outdoors in different weather conditions.
