Tax Manager, Core Tax Services - ASC 740

Job Summary The Core Tax Services (CTS) Manager – ASC740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 tax issues. In this role, the manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, and recognizes and communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy. Responsibilities Tax Compliance Ensures client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with firm policies, standards, and the TQM. Conducts top‑level review of tax return/preparation and resolves all tax issues with clients, involving specialists when appropriate. Communicates issues identified in tax accrual review with assurance clients. Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures, including: Budgeting and staffing. Monitoring engagement process and actual time versus budget. Timely billing, including management of out‑of‑scope activity and communication to client. Timely collection of accounts receivable. Manages client relationships and expectations in accordance with project objectives. Provides timely advice to clients. Research Identifies when research is needed, clearly frames issues, and reports analysis concisely. Identifies complex issues for engagement team research and provides efficient research methodology. Trains managers and staff on research skills and frames ASC 740 tax issues for analysis. Involves firm specialists as appropriate. ASC 740 Tax Accruals Applies firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740 proactively. Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients and complex ASC 740 issues. Communicates with assurance team to plan tax accrual reviews, including budget, scope, and delivery dates. Reviews tax provisions applying in‑depth knowledge of ASC 740. Reviews prepared workpapers. Utilizes and manages Specialized Tax Services (STS) as needed. Tax Consulting Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by reducing current and future taxes. Considers applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client. Develops and implements a work plan to organize STS assistance on ongoing client projects. Serves as a technical resource. Ensures client service teams comply with firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA). Provides effective assistance with exam support. Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associates. Tax Specialization Develops an in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues and opportunities in areas such as corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits, etc. Might organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in the area of specialization, involving firm specialists. May train and mentor managers, seniors, and associates on ASC 740. Strategy Development Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions, e.g., by reducing taxes or expenses or providing non‑tax benefits. Consistently suggests improvements to previous work products or approaches. May lead marketing campaigns if applicable to the role. Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients. Collaborates with the firm’s National Tax and Specialized Tax Services to deliver high‑quality deliverables and analyses on ASC 740. Other duties as required. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises Associates and Senior Associates on all projects. Reviews work prepared by Associates and Senior Associates and provides review comments. Trains Associates and Seniors on using all current software tools. Acts as a career advisor to Associates and Senior Associates. Schedules and manages workload of Associates and Senior Associates. Provides verbal and written performance feedback to Associates and Senior Associates. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Taxation, required. Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation, preferred. Experience: Five (5) or more years of prior experience, required. Experience managing the process of preparing and auditing ASC 740 computations for privately held and publicly traded clients, required. Supervisory experience, required. Multinational client experience, preferred. License/Certifications: CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (EA) (or equivalent), required. Software: Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat, required. Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA; proficiency in all tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, GoSystemRS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs and standard tax workpapers, preferred. Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Superior verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively delegate work as needed. Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, as well as decision‑making skills. Ability to work well in a team environment. Able to develop and manage a team of tax professionals. Ability to compose written tax advice. Ability to effectively develop and maintain client relationships.
