An established hydraulic manifold manufacturer in Lenexa is seeking an experienced Mill Machinist / Programmer to program, set up, and operate CNC milling machines while ensuring high-quality production and on-time delivery. This role combines hands-on machining with CNC programming and process improvement, working closely with peers and leadership in a climate-controlled, small to medium-sized machine shop.
Responsibilities
- Set up, maintain, and operate CNC milling machines in accordance with standard work instructions and routing documentation.
- Develop project documentation (routing) and machine code using MasterCam, Vericut, Solidworks, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Create, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs, including G-code and M-code, and support CMM-related programming needs.
- Diagnose and resolve programming and machining issues, advising peers and supervision as necessary to maintain productivity and quality.
- Work collaboratively with peers to maintain production schedules and meet production deadlines while sustaining high quality standards.
- Document and maintain tool inventory, ensuring tools are available, properly stored, and ready for use.
- Partner with management to develop best practices, continuous improvement activities, work holding solutions, and tooling strategies.
- Communicate promptly with supervision when direction is unclear or when issues arise that may impact production or quality.
- Set up machining centers according to routing and standard operating procedures, producing in-tolerance setup pieces.
- Follow temporary manufacturing deviation request (TMDR) procedures when changes are required and ensure proper documentation.
- Decommission machines after operations are complete, following established procedures for shutdown and cleanup.
- Build and tear down tooling as needed, inspecting tooling for wear and notifying supervision to maintain tool crib organization and cleanliness.
- Load parts on machines following standard work instructions and established best practices.
- Inspect parts using in-process inspection methods to verify conformance, identify non-conforming material, and take appropriate action.
- Stop machines and notify supervision when non-conforming material is detected, tagging material with clear defect descriptions.
- Sort and contain non-conforming material according to SOP to prevent unintended use and maintain quality standards.
- Deburr parts according to standard work instructions, producing desired results and visually inspecting for abnormal conditions.
- Run and clean multiple machines as directed, maintaining a tidy and safe work area.
- Work in a team environment with operators, machinists, and leads to achieve production goals and support colleagues as directed by supervision.
- Several years of machining experience, including hands-on work with CNC milling machines.
- Strong knowledge of G-code and M-code for CNC programming and machine operation.
- Experience with CMM-related programming or integration in a machining environment.
- Recent, practical experience using MasterCam for CNC programming.
- Recent experience using Vericut for program verification and simulation.
- Proficiency with Solidworks for interpreting or creating models used in machining and programming.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office products to develop routing documentation, reports, and project records.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings for machining operations.
- Experience working with CAD/CAM tools in a machine shop setting.
- Hands-on experience with mills, lathes, and general machining processes.
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools such as micrometers and other inspection equipment.
- Experience with CNC controls and equipment such as Haas, Okuma, Fanuc, and multi-axis machines.
- Ability to perform setups, including tooling build and teardown, on CNC machines.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing in-tolerance, high-quality parts.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Formal technical school training in machining, CNC programming, or a related field is preferred.
- Background in manual machining and machine shop operations.
- Experience working in a small to medium-sized machine shop environment.
- Familiarity with standard operating procedures (SOP) and routing documentation in manufacturing.
- Comfort working with inspection processes, non-conforming material handling, and quality documentation.
- Ability to support continuous improvement activities and contribute ideas for process optimization.
- Strong communication skills to clearly share information with supervisors and peers.
- Organizational skills to maintain tool inventory and support tool crib cleanliness and order.
