Oncology Navigator - Part time - (RN licensure required)

Job Summary The role of an Oncology Navigator is to help guide a patient through the healthcare system. This includes assisting with screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of cancer. The Navigator helps patients communicate with their healthcare providers so they receive the information needed to make health care decisions, sets up appointments for doctor visits and medical tests, and provides financial, legal, and social support. They work with insurance companies, employers, case managers, lawyers, and other stakeholders to overcome healthcare system barriers and provide timely access to quality medical and psychosocial care throughout the cancer experience. Responsibilities Supports and advocates for patients and families throughout the care continuum. Serves as a liaison between the care team and patient/family. Provides education and appropriate materials to patient/family. Directs patients to credible information sites such as the American Cancer Society and National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Promotes continuity of care by assisting with treatment transitions. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team and participates in cancer case conferences and discussions. Co‑ordinates care, including referrals within and outside the cancer center, and prioritizes workflow for timely access. Identifies and eliminates barriers to care (transportation, financial, insurance, psychosocial). Uses distress screening tools to gauge needs and responses. Assesses patient symptoms and reports needs/concerns to providers. Documents in the electronic medical record (EPIC, ARIA, IKNOWMED) and records productivity in the PN-BOT navigation statistic system. Prepares and delivers community presentations on prevention, screening, and oncology topics. Creates and pursues a personal development plan for self and team. Performs performance‑improvement projects and contributes to programmatic growth. Conducts self‑evaluation using the ONN Matrix, updates leadership. Networks internally and externally, building knowledge and connections to resources for patient care. Education & Certifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate degree (RN Diploma, ASN, or ADN) required. Registered Nurse with current VA license required. Smoking Cessation certification required (or obtain within 1 year). Navigation certification (e.g., AONN) required (or obtain within 4 years). BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) from American Heart Association required. Qualifications Ability to perform data analysis to identify strategies for increasing completion of screenings, follow‑up visits, in‑treatment and post‑treatment appointments. Ability to work with groups to improve quality of life across the care continuum: prevention, risk reduction, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, supportive (palliative) care, and end‑of‑life.
