Functional Lead

We’re looking for a Functional Lead to serve as one of the four cornerstone leaders of our engineering organization. You will own one of four key functions of our engineering system Sense, Comms, Forecast, or Effect and will be responsible for guiding a team of experts to deliver critical components of our technology. This is a unique and pivotal role where you will rotate leadership across these functions, meaning you will need both deep technical expertise and also be a highly adaptable generalist. The ideal candidate is a strategic, hands‑on leader who can rapidly master and lead diverse technical domains. You must be able to understand and guide work in reinforcement learning, edge hardware, complex networking, and cloud workflows. This role is for a fungible leader who thrives on collaboration, working closely with other leads to dynamically allocate resources and drive progress based on the needs of each iteration. Responsibilities Serve as the Responsible Engineer for one of our four core functional areas (Sense, Comms, Forecast, or Effect), rotating leadership every year to build deep cross-domain knowledge. Direct the full iteration cycle for your assigned function, managing the pacing, prioritization, and successful delivery of your team's outputs. Lead, mentor, and ensure the safety and wellbeing of the Individual Contributors (ICs) and managers within your function, while ensuring continuity of effort and thorough documentation. Participate directly in our feedback‑weighted resource allocation process, providing expert input to prioritize the engineering backlog and guide iteration planning. Prepare forward‑looking projections and direct the acquisition and integration of new functional sub‑systems to advance our capabilities. Ensure all functional outputs are appropriately coupled to the inputs and outputs of other functions, improving the robustness and efficiency of the entire system. Champion and maintain coherent cross‑functional communication and collaboration. You are given wide latitude for how a solution is implemented and are responsible for delivering it in a way that measurably improves cross‑functional coupling. Be prepared to present technical data and team progress in public forums. Qualifications Proven experience leading teams of technical experts in a chaotic high‑paced environment. Deep understanding of reinforcement learning methodologies with hands‑on experience deploying and managing RL systems in production environments. Broad knowledge of machine learning inference systems, including applications in vision, voice, and control. Hands‑on experience with edge computing hardware and developing cloud‑based workflows. Proficiency in understanding and creating UML and sequence diagrams for complex systems. A strong grasp of complex networking principles and radio propagation. Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to guide and motivate experts in domains that may be outside your primary area of expertise. Strong oral, written communication, and public presentation skills. The ability to work seamlessly with other leaders and adapt to shifting priorities to meet the needs of the organization.
