Phlebotomist

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.

Performs screening tests and reports results.

Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing. Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing. Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens. Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.

Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training. Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices. Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.

Ability to communicate proficiently in English (verbal and written) in order to develop positive rapport with patients, co-workers, and other stakeholders.

Ability to utilize telephonic interpreter/translation services to complete assigned duties if not fluent in a language the patient understands.

Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, latex/non-latex gloves) as needed.

Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology.

Must satisfactorily complete the defined competency provided for the Phlebotomy/Accession Lab Position during a probationary period unless extension is granted by the supervisor.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent

Certification as a Phlebotomist by an acceptable facility or training course.

Previous experience or education in a health-related field is preferred.

Maintenance of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Workers or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification for Healthcare workers preferred.

Continuous sitting up to 2 hours per shift.

Continuous periods of walking and standing for 4 or more hours per shift.

Lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs periodically and lifting up to 50-100 lbs rarely.

Frequently working on computers/tablets throughout the shift.

Frequent grasping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting.
