Pay Rates: 12‑hour day: $365.65 ; 24‑hour day: $731.30 Chief Engineer (DDA) Minimum endorsement as a national designated duty engineer of motor‑propelled vessels of less than 500 GRT on near‑coastal routes without a horsepower limitation. Pay Rates: 12‑hour day: $324.25 ; 24‑hour day: $648.90 Assistant Engineer (DDL) / Engineer Trainee Minimum endorsement as a national assistant engineer 6,000 HP or national designated duty engineer of motor‑propelled vessels of less than 4,000 HP or less than 500 GRT, or a third assistant engineer of motor‑propelled vessels. Pay Rates: 12‑hour day: $293.55 ; 24‑hour day: $587.10 Relief Engineers Pay Rates: 12‑hour day: $242.05 – $301.28 ; 24‑hour day: $484.10 – $602.56 Schedule 14 days on the vessel and 14 days off the vessel. Job Summary The engineer is directly responsible to the master for the proper operation and maintenance of all mechanical equipment on the vessel, ensuring safe and efficient vessel machinery operation. Physical Demands Read and comprehend manufacturers' instruction manuals and written directives. Manipulate small items in restricted spaces and large objects using mechanical lifting devices. Maintain adequate hearing for safety and be able to communicate via VHF‑FM radio, intercom, or voice communication. Move heavy or awkward equipment, ascending and descending stairs and ladders, often while carrying tools or objects. Work in confined or restricted spaces, with high noise levels, and under conditions where machinery may be hot or pressurized. Perform emergency duties as required. Have color vision suitable for troubleshooting electrical systems and identifying safety indicators. Duties Securely stow all gear in proper locations. Maintain main engine cylinder blow‑down valves for efficient engine starts. Adhere to company policies and procedures. Assist in line‑handling operations. Maintain accurate engine logs, fuel or lube receipts, and daily reports electronically; email logs to View email address on click.appcast.io after midnight. Conduct monthly fire drills; inspect and log emergency equipment; report deficiencies. Complete the engine department maintenance checklist quarterly, submitting to the engineering department by the 20th of each month. Take hourly system readings if the machinery alarm system is inoperable. Record incidents of bottom contact or object strikes and notify the OICNW. Operate emergency bilge suction valves and maintain bilge drains. Oversee transfer of fluids, including fuel, lube oil, DEF, hydraulic oil, ballast water, and potable water. Perform routine and emergency repairs on main and auxiliary systems. Maintain scheduled maintenance plans and overall vessel machinery operation. Maintain engine room cleanliness, tools, and safety equipment. Comply with TSMS and applicable regulations. Carry out oil and fuel transfers in accordance with TSMS Section 5.1. Ensure firefighting equipment is operational and fire pumps are ready. Report unsafe conditions to the master and take proactive safety actions. Stop work if hazards cannot be mitigated, following TSMS Section 6.8. Protect crew safety and prevent environmental pollution incidents. Order machinery parts and supplies as needed. Complete daily engine department reports accurately, recording temperature, pressure, and RPM readings over 24‑hour periods. Check fixed fire‑extinguishing system pressure if equipped. Submit work orders for repairs beyond engine room capabilities. Perform daily inspections of steering gear and clutch controls at the start of each watch. Required Licensure & Certifications A U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) endorsed as a National Assistant Engineer Limited 6,000 HP or greater, or a National Designated Duty Engineer (Any HP 500 GRT or greater). A valid medical certificate. A Transportation Worker Identification Card. Minimum endorsement as a National Chief Engineer (Limited) of Motor‑Propelled Vessels of less than 1,600 GRT on Near‑Coastal routes without a horsepower limitation.
