Position Title Social Studies Teacher (Grades 5-8) Summary Under the general supervision of the School Director, the teacher will facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district‑approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. Compensation Base Salary‑Certified‑$73,500; $3,000 for masters, $5,000 for doctorate; $200 per year for applicable experience. Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. (Masters preferred) Valid New York Instructional Certificate and Subject Area Endorsement or eligibility. Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary. Knowledge of various technological software and equipment for tasks such as word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual presentations, and telecommunications. Understanding of the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school‑related matters. Knowledge of child growth and development, individual differences in ability, personality and interests, and learning/motivational techniques. Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students. Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Knowledge of grade‑specific school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught. Knowledge of Smartboard functions and tools. Ability to engage in self‑evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others, including parents, students, faculty, etc. Essential Performance Responsibilities The Social Studies Teacher will: Develop and administer curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives. Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and translate lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction. Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual students' needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual small group instruction as needed. Deliver instruction with the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures. Continue to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research. Organize and maintain a system for accurate and complete record‑keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance, as required by district procedures and applicable laws. Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents. Ensure that student conduct conforms with school standards, school district policies, and establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom. Coordinate with other staff members, especially within grade level and specific subjects, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participate in faculty meetings and committees. Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintain inventory records. Supervise students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation. Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the School Director and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent. Equipment Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, tablets, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone. Travel Requirements Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required. Experience Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
