Chief Financial Officer - Interim CFO in Texas

The Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides executive leadership and oversight of all financial operations for a Community Hospital Corporation (CHC) owned or managed hospital. Working closely with CHC's Vice President of Hospital Financial Operations, the Interim CFO serves as a strategic financial leader responsible for ensuring the hospital's financial stability, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and long-term fiscal sustainability.
Supporting the hospital's mission and strategic objectives, the Interim CFO oversees financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, revenue cycle operations, payroll, accounting, auditing, treasury functions, purchasing, insurance, and capital management. This role ensures adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), regulatory requirements, and CHC financial policies and procedures while providing accurate and timely financial information to support operational decision-making.
The Interim CFO establishes and maintains positive working relationships with lending institutions, auditors, physicians, employees, community stakeholders, board members, and CHC leadership.
Requirements
- BS/BA degree in finance, accounting, business or a related discipline required. A CPA designation preferred. A graduate level degree is a plus.
- 5 – 7 years of progressive career experience in Hospital Finance/Accounting. Hospital CFO experience required.
- Requires managerial experience and demonstrated understanding and experience with hospital financial reporting, revenue cycle management, accounting, budgeting, accounts payable, treasury, audit, tax, payroll, information technology and materials management.
- Experience working in community hospitals, rural hospitals, or critical access hospitals.
- Sequel Reporting a plus.
Essential Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Oversight
- Direct and oversee all hospital financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, treasury, payroll, revenue cycle, purchasing, audit, tax, and materials management.
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, operating reports, variance analyses, and management reports.
- Monitor organizational financial performance and identify opportunities to improve operational and financial outcomes.
- Ensure the timely and accurate completion of month-end and year-end close processes.
- Maintain compliance with GAAP, governmental regulations, and CHC financial policies.
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls designed to safeguard hospital assets.
Budgeting, Analysis & Reporting
- Collaborate with department leaders regarding budget-to-actual performance, capital expenditures, productivity metrics, and financial trends.
- Monitor budget variances and provide meaningful analysis and recommendations to hospital leadership and CHC.
- Review and analyze contractual adjustments, reimbursement trends, and other key financial indicators.
- Prepare routine financial reports, analyses, forecasts, and special projects as assigned.
- Monitor capital expenditures, capital projects, and leased equipment to ensure compliance with approved budgets and policies.
Accounting & Cash Management
- Oversee general ledger activity, account reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentation.
- Review balance sheet reconciliations and complete all required post-closing review procedures.
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, investments, and treasury activities.
- Reconcile bank accounts and coordinate cash management processes with external banking partners.
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of all financial records.
Revenue Cycle, Payroll & Accounts Payable
- Provide oversight of revenue cycle operations to optimize cash collections and financial performance.
- Manage accounts payable processes to ensure accurate and timely vendor payments.
- Oversee payroll operations, ensuring accurate employee compensation, deductions, and general ledger reporting.
- Monitor productivity reporting, sales tax filings, escheat reporting, and other required financial filings.
Compliance, Audits & Regulatory Reporting
- Coordinate and manage all financial audits, including annual independent audits.
- Assist with preparation of annual Medicare and Medicaid cost reports.
- Oversee financial and statistical reporting requirements for governmental agencies, industry organizations, and third-party entities.
- Manage reporting associated with Uncompensated Care, Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) programs, American Hospital Association (AHA) surveys, state reporting requirements, and other regulatory filings.
Leadership & Communication
- Effectively communicate financial information to executives, department leaders, board members, and CHC leadership.
- Provide financial education and training to managers and directors regarding financial statements, reporting tools, budgeting, and performance metrics.
- Foster collaboration across departments and support operational leaders in achieving organizational goals.
- Present complex financial information professionally, clearly, and ethically.
