To monitor, evaluate, respond to, and assure compliance with regulatory and legislative actions which affect the Family of Companies and corporate affairs. To work with executive staff members and various departmental staff in protecting the companies and their policyholders from unnecessary fines, penalties, and adverse public relations. To create, monitor, and update as necessary, company-wide compliance protocol to proactively address emerging compliance issues that could impact the companies' business. To work as a member of the Legal Department in researching the intent of laws and judicial decisions and applying the law to the particular circumstances of the business enterprise. To assist with handling or supervision of outside legal counsel on various legal matters including Intellectual Property (IP), real estate, contracts, litigation, insurance policy issues, legislation, campaign finance, member legal education, and other general legal matters.
Monitor insurance-related and general corporate-related regulatory and legislative actions. Evaluate impact on Farm Bureau Insurance and Michigan Farm Bureau. Provide support to Michigan Farm Bureau legislative counsel.
Work closely with departments within the Family of Companies to develop best practices to assure the companies are in compliance with insurance regulation and legislation. Research and assist in responding to complaints and actions against the companies related to compliance.
Participate in corporate projects where compliance expertise is required. Research and make recommendations to support the projects, including but not limited to, privacy, annuity suitability, document retention, electronic delivery of documents, electronic signatures, adverse action notifications, and cancellation requirements.
Advise administrative staff with respect to laws and regulations affecting their respective functions.
Required
Juris doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school required.
Must be admitted to the State Bar of Michigan and in good standing with no record of any professional disciplinary action.
Possess high personal standards necessary to handle highly confidential and sensitive matters.
Ability to establish amicable and trusted relationships with directors, management and business associates.
Two to four years of experience as a corporate or insurance attorney preferred. Note: Farm Bureau offers a full benefit package including medical, dental, vision, and 401K. PM19
