Fleet Maintenance Technician

Inspect and repair vehicles and related equipment to meet Federal and State safety standards. Diagnoses malfunctions and performs technical repairs of a complex nature on school buses, automobiles, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks. Operate trucks, buses, automobiles, and other equipment. Performs other duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Performs Federal and State inspection of vehicles and make necessary repairs for compliance.
• Analyzes the reported malfunctions of components or systems in all types of automotive and mechanical equipment to determine the type of failure and the necessary repair procedure.
• Diagnoses and tests various computerized components. Repairs and rebuilds major components such as brakes, electronic ignition, fuel systems, steering and suspension, electrical and computerized climate control systems.
• Remove, disassembles, and repairs major components such as engines (gas and diesel), transmissions, differentials, auxiliary drives, and similar equipment.
• Responds to calls for road service. Transports buses to and from breakdown locations. Test drives trucks, buses, automobiles, and equipment to diagnose malfunctions. Drives trucks, automobiles, and buses among the transportation shop locations and repair facilities.
• Maintains required logs and reports necessary for the preventive maintenance records in accordance with policy.
• Performs routine maintenance, vehicle upfitting, and assists with new vehicle acquisition and disposal.
• Assigns and reviews scheduled preventive maintenance work of lower-level transportation maintenance employees. Assists in training lower-level transportation maintenance employees.
• Participates in snow duty during inclement weather.
• Assignments:
• Fleet Maintenance Technicians' primary role may vary based on the system's need to maintain efficient and effective services. Management maintains the right to assign employees as needed with little or no notice to meet the needs of the school system. The following are examples of assignments within the Fleet Maintenance Technician classification:
• Bus Lot Assigned Fleet Technician- Primarily responsible for day-to-day maintenance and repair of school buses at the lot. Handles facility needs at their location which may consist of ordering fuel, parts, supplies, and contracting various departments as needed for building maintenance.
• Shop Assigned Fleet Technician- Primarily responsible for completing Type A inspection and repair on school buses or preventative maintenance inspection and repair on White Fleet.
• Mobile Diagnostic Fleet Technician- Primarily responsible for performing mobile diagnostic in the field at various locations. Reflash, calibrate, and program computers, modules, and automotive parts.
• Mobile Support Fleet Technician- Primarily responsible for providing coverage at various locations in the absence of a Bus Lot Assigned Fleet Technician or Automotive Mechanic.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience:

• Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent. Five years of progressively responsible experience in advanced automotive and/or truck diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work.
• The successful completion of formal automotive training courses is preferred.
• Note:Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the class may be considered.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required at time of employment.
• Possession of a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required within six months of hire. (The class B license may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of automotive parts, components, and systems. Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in automotive repair, maintenance, and service.
• Skill in the service of automobiles and related equipment, components, and systems.
• Ability to use computers and industry standard diagnostic equipment to diagnose vehicle problems. Ability to follow lubrication charts. Ability to make component adjustments as specified in maintenance manuals and to keep simple records of fuel and lubricant disbursements. Ability to complete assignments by established deadlines. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Knowledge of Federal and State minimum safety standards to inspect and repair vehicles by.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

• The work of this class entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting, and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment. Work requires exposure to the outdoor environment. Work requires strict adherence to instructions. Work is generally non-hazardous but failure to exercise reasonable care could result in some injury.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Persons appointed to this class are required to obtain a valid commercial, class B Maryland driver's license or an equivalent within six months of hire. Employees who do not obtain the required license will be terminated. Persons appointed to this class must be physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment. Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy. Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential-As-Needed Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency when contacted and directed to do so. This class specification defines the types of duties and level of difficulty of work required of positions in this title. It shall not be held to exclude duties not mentioned nor limit the right of management to assign work to employees. Citizenship, residency, or work VISA in United States required.

FLSA: Non-Exempt RETIREMENT: This position is eligible for the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System.
