Job Title: Labor and Delivery Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of two years in Labor & Delivery License: Current RN license in state of practice Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course, Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM) or Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Must-Have: - Associate Degree (A.S.) or equivalent - Two years of Labor & Delivery experience - Required RN license in state of practice Description: The Labor and Delivery Nurse is responsible for planning and providing nursing care to patients and their families during the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. This includes managing emergency situations and circulating for C-sections. The nurse supervises and delegates care responsibilities to ancillary personnel according to their scope of practice. The position is represented by a nursing association. The Labor and Delivery Nurse performs physical and psychosocial assessments of patients, considering age and cultural differences. They initiate multidisciplinary, goal-oriented care plans for each patient in collaboration with healthcare team members. The nurse demonstrates appropriate clinical judgment in managing perinatal emergencies, including crash C-sections and shoulder dystocia. They assess fetal and maternal well-being, amniotic fluid status, and vaginal bleeding, recognizing and managing abnormalities. Effective pain management for the laboring patient is essential, including implementing alternative pain control methods as needed. The nurse assists with epidural catheter placement and monitors fetal and maternal status during this process. Education for patients and families throughout the perinatal and postpartum periods is provided, using methods that are appropriate to age, condition, culture, and learning readiness. Documentation of all nursing care provided, including evaluation of patients' responses to medications, treatments, and procedures, must be legible, accurate, and timely. The nurse consistently performs necessary unit-specific safety and quality control checks. Other job-related duties may be assigned as needed.
