Molecular Ecologist

Job Description and Duties

This position offers an exciting opportunity to join the Collaborative Ecological Studies Unit at the Department of Water Resources (DWR). Under the general direction of the Collaborative Ecological Studies (CES) Unit Manager, the incumbent will conduct genetic monitoring and molecular ecological studies for water management decision-making within the San Francisco Estuary. In this capacity, the incumbent is responsible for genetic sample processing, data collection, field activities, analysis, and reporting of applied genetic studies that are responsive to the research needs identified within the Incidental Take Permit (ITP), Biological Opinions (BiOps), and water rights decisions. As part of the Interagency Ecological Program (IEP) and the DWR Collaborative Science & Innovation (CSI) section, the incumbent will prioritize the use of innovative technology and collaborative partnerships to advance DWR's efforts to have scientific evidence drive policy and management decision-making critical to the State's water supply operation and planning.

Special Requirements

Field sampling may require traversing uneven terrain and boat activities in rugged outdoor environments and inclement weather. The incumbent must be able to meet the demands of field studies in aquatic habitats. Specifically, the incumbent must be able to:

• Swim at least 50 yards and stay afloat at least 10 minutes

• Function in rough seas without incapacitation due to seasickness

• Move and transport equipment up to 50 pounds

The incumbent may also be required to conduct field sampling at night to meet project objectives. Overtime and weekend work may be required as necessary to meet project objectives.

The incumbent will be required to drive to field study locations and to off-site meetings and must possess a valid California driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience with DNA/RNA extraction and molecular laboratory methods, including PCR, qPCR, genotyping, and NGS, is desirable. Experience collecting and preserving samples, collecting ecological field data, following field protocols, and maintaining laboratory equipment and sample inventories is also desirable. Candidates with experience analyzing genetic and ecological data, using statistical or graphics software, applying bioinformatics tools, and conducting QA/QC are preferred. Experience developing laboratory protocols, presenting results, working as part of a team, and preparing technical reports or manuscripts is also desirable.
