General Description and Hiring Rate


The hiring rate for this position is $22.28/hr.
Under general supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor, or designee. Performs a wide variety of welding and repair tasks in the fabrication, modification, and repair of vehicles and equipment in the Public Works Department, in accordance with all applicable City codes and Departmental policies. Duties are generally performed independently. Requires the ability to work overtime and holidays when required and be contacted by telephone for call-out after hours. Work is reviewed through observations and obtained results.

Essential Job Functions

• Performs electrical welding.
• Performs fabrication, modification, and repair of automotive, mechanical, and related equipment.
• Heats, brazes, cuts, resurfaces, and fits ferrous and non-ferrous metals on heavy and light equipment according to work orders, sketches, or blueprints.
• Mandatory overtime, holiday work, and call-outs may be required.
• Orders supplies and materials; and keeps records of material usage.
• Work may include fabrication and welding for other Divisions/Departments within the City.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES. AND SKILLS

• Considerable knowledge in the techniques in using electrical welding equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of the properties of various ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
• Knowledge of the practices, materials, and tools of the welding trade.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions of the trade.
• Knowledge of hydraulic pumps, cylinders, valves, and electrical wiring harnesses related to the mechanics trade.
• Ability to fabricate and repair equipment using electrical welding equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret sketches and blueprints.
• Knowledge of the mechanics trade.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to access input and retrieve information and data from a computer.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school; or GED, supplemented by two (2) years' experience as a welder; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License, with air brake endorsement.
No Valid CDL with proper endorsement(s) - CDL Permit within six (6) months from date of hire, and valid CDL with proper endorsements within eighteen (18) months from date of hire. Employees without a valid CDL and appropriate endorsements on their date of hire will serve an extended probation until the valid CDL and endorsements are obtained, to include necessary training and classroom time and will not exceed eighteen (18) months from date of hire.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Works is primarily in a non-air-conditioned workshop environment with some outside work under various weather conditions.
