Generalist Medical Technologist
The generalist medical technologist performs and reports the full range of moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory testing across chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, toxicology, molecular technology, and related disciplines, exercising independent technical judgment within laboratory procedures. The position serves as a technical resource on the bench, supports method verification and quality management, and provides direction to technician-level and support staff as delegated.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform and report moderate and high complexity testing across the general laboratory menu using automated and manual methods, and resolve discrepant or unexpected results before release.
- Review quality control and Levey-Jennings data, evaluate shifts and trends, and initiate corrective action and documentation.
- Verify new lots and reagents, and validate new or modified methods as assigned, including precision, accuracy, reportable range, and reference interval studies.
- Participate in instrument correlation, calibration verification, and preventive maintenance.
- Enter and release results in the laboratory information system, assist with test builds and dictionary review as assigned, and report critical values according to policy.
- Perform and evaluate proficiency testing, and assist with proficiency testing review and investigation for the medical director as assigned.
- Provide training and orientation, and, when delegated and qualified, competency assessment for technicians and support staff.
- Contribute to the development and review of standard operating procedures.
- Follow safety, infection control, and specimen handling procedures.
Education, Certification, and Licensure
- Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology, or a related science with education that meets the certification and Florida licensure requirements for this role.
- Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist, MLS(ASCP) or MT(ASCP), or an equivalent technologist-level certification from another recognized certifying body such as American Medical Technologists.
- Current Florida clinical laboratory personnel license at the technologist level. A Florida Generalist Technologist license covers microbiology, serology/immunology, clinical chemistry, hematology, and immunohematology. Eligibility for Florida licensure is acceptable with licensure obtained within the timeframe set by the laboratory and Florida law.
- Meets the CLIA high complexity testing personnel qualifications under 42 CFR 493.1489.
Experience
At least two years of clinical laboratory experience as a medical technologist or medical laboratory scientist.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Independent technical judgment across the general laboratory disciplines.
- Strong quality management skills, including quality control evaluation, method verification, and corrective action.
- Familiarity with CLIA and accreditation requirements.
- Effective at guiding and training less experienced staff.
- Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation, a laboratory information system, and spreadsheet tools.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Work is performed in a clinical laboratory and patient service setting. The role involves extended periods of standing and sitting, repetitive hand and wrist motion, and frequent use of a computer and laboratory instruments. The employee handles blood and other potentially infectious materials and works around chemical reagents, and must follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee follows all applicable CLIA requirements, laboratory accreditation standards, HIPAA privacy and security requirements, OSHA and bloodborne pathogen requirements, and White-Wilson policies and procedures. The employee completes required training and competency assessment on schedule, keeps certification and Florida licensure in active status, and reports safety concerns and events through the appropriate channels.

7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, four days per week. Rotating weekend coverage may be required.
