We are seeking a detail-oriented Cost Estimator to join our chemical distribution and storage operations. This role is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates for freight, storage, handling, and distribution services, supporting pricing decisions, and ensuring profitability across our chemical logistics network. The ideal candidate has a strong analytical background and familiarity with bulk liquid, dry bulk, or hazardous materials handling.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed cost estimates for transportation, warehousing, tank storage, transloading, and related distribution services
- Analyze freight rates, fuel surcharges, demurrage, labor, and equipment costs to build accurate pricing models
- Collaborate with sales, operations, and logistics teams to prepare customer quotes and proposals
- Review historical cost data and market trends to refine estimating accuracy
- Evaluate costs associated with hazmat compliance, permitting, and specialized equipment (e.g., tank trucks, rail cars, ISO containers)
- Support bid preparation for new contracts and RFPs/RFQs
- Track estimate-to-actual variances and recommend process improvements
- Maintain estimating templates, rate databases, and cost models
- Ensure estimates account for regulatory requirements (DOT, EPA, OSHA) specific to chemical handling and storage
- Communicate estimate assumptions and risk factors clearly to internal stakeholders
Qualifications
- Must know AACE 97R-18 to facilitate the estimates
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, Engineering, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 2+ years of experience in cost estimating, pricing, or logistics analysis, ideally within chemical, industrial, or bulk distribution industries
- Strong Excel skills; experience with TMS, ERP, or estimating software a plus
- Understanding of bulk liquid/dry bulk transportation, tank storage, or hazmat logistics preferred
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple estimates/deadlines simultaneously
- Knowledge of DOT/EPA/OSHA regulations related to chemical transport and storage is a plus
