Job Description
To plan, organize and implement an appropriate speech/language program in a school learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
Essential Functions
- Displays knowledge and skill in slp therapy and understands with a wide range of pedagogical approaches.
- Displays knowledge of students' skills, knowledge, language proficiency, interests, cultural heritage, and special needs.
- Establishes clear and appropriate goals for speech/language services.
- Effectively uses school and District resources to meet the student needs.
- Synthesizes evaluation results with relevant observations and related findings to school functioning.
- Appies school district criteria consistently and accurately for students.
- Develops a plan to assess the services which are organized around clear goals and the collection of evidence to indicate the degree to which the goals have been met.
- Demonstrates accurate knowledge of special education laws and procedures.
- Interacts respectfully with students, parents, other members of the service team and school staff.
- Conveys genuine enthusiasm for slp services and designs instructional outcomes and activities that convey high expectations for students/ learning and achievement.
- Is consistent in communication regarding the referral process.
- Organizes a safe environment where physical resources and materials are available when needed.
- Supports and maintains standards of conduct for student behavior and appropriately responds to student misbehavior.
- Responds to referrals by making a thorough assessment of student needs.
- Collects the important information on which to base speech/language goals.
- Produces reports which are accurate and appropriate to the audience.
- Provides activities that engage students and establishes therapy groups which are productive and appropriate to the students or the purpose of the therapy.
- Uses materials and resources which are appropriate for student needs.
- Constructs therapy sessions with clearly defined structures with an appropriate pace for the students.
- Monitors the progress of the students using data and provides feedback to students in a timely and consistent manner.
- Encourages student self-monitoring and self-assessment.
- Makes revisions to goals and plans for delivery of services when appropriate.
- Accommodates students' questions, interests, and needs and seeks a variety of strategies for students who have difficulty.
- Reflections provide an accurate and objective description of practice, citing specific positive and negative characteristics.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
- Strong background and experience with the speech/language therapy
- Able to establish strong connections with students and families
- Able to work collaboratively with others
- Able to synthesize data to help inform decisions
- Knowledge of social/emotional needs of the student body
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to building relationships effectively and professionally with students, families, and staff
Education, Credentials and/or Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
- Illinois Professional Educator License with proper licensure for speech/language pathology
While performing job duties, the employee is regularly required to sit; bend; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. Generally, employees must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, however depending on the specific position and individual student needs, employee physical requirements may exceed the generally established weight limitation. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee regularly types using a keyboard. Within the work environment, the employee is exposed to a computer screen and regularly works within an office environment. The employee occasionally works evenings and/or weekends. The employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and regularly works with the use of a personal vehicle. The employee will have contact with the public, which requires appropriate demeanor. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate. The physical demands and work environment described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
