Job Description:

Position Summary

The PRN Laboratory Supervisor provides hands-on laboratory and supervisory support within a Medical Oncology practice on an as-needed basis. This position performs clinical laboratory testing while providing day-to-day oversight of laboratory workflow, quality control, regulatory compliance, and laboratory operations.

The PRN Laboratory Supervisor supports the safe, accurate, and timely processing and testing of specimens used in the care and treatment of oncology patients. The position works closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, and practice leadership to ensure laboratory services are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

This is a non-exempt, hourly position and does not guarantee a minimum number of scheduled hours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations

• Perform and oversee laboratory testing in accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
• Provide hands-on laboratory coverage and support based on practice needs.
• Coordinate daily laboratory workflow to support timely collection, processing, testing, and reporting of patient specimens.
• Perform hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, and other testing within the scope of the practice and individual licensure.
• Review laboratory results for accuracy and completeness and ensure critical or abnormal results are communicated according to established procedures.
• Perform specimen processing, instrument operation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting as needed.
• Monitor laboratory supplies and reagents and communicate inventory or equipment needs to appropriate leadership.
• Assist with resolving laboratory workflow, specimen, equipment, or testing issues.
• Maintain accurate and complete laboratory records and documentation.

Quality and Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure laboratory activities are performed in accordance with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, Florida laboratory requirements , and organizational policies and procedures.
• Perform and review required quality control activities and take appropriate action when results fall outside established parameters.
• Assist with proficiency testing, competency documentation, quality assurance activities, and laboratory inspections.
• Monitor appropriate specimen collection, labeling, handling, storage, processing, and disposal.
• Ensure required maintenance, temperature, quality control, and testing logs are completed accurately and timely.
• Identify laboratory quality, safety, or compliance concerns and promptly communicate concerns to appropriate leadership.
• Maintain laboratory safety standards, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment and infection prevention practices.

Staff Support

• Assist laboratory staff with technical questions, workflow concerns, and troubleshooting.
• Reinforce established laboratory procedures, quality standards, and safety requirements.
• Assist with orientation, training, and competency assessment of laboratory personnel as needed.
• Provide immediate feedback regarding laboratory processes or performance and escalate significant employee concerns to appropriate leadership.
• Support effective communication and teamwork among laboratory, nursing, and clinical staff.

Medical Oncology Support

• Support laboratory services necessary for the evaluation and treatment of Medical Oncology patients.
• Work collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing, infusion, and other clinical team members to support timely patient care.
• Prioritize laboratory workflow based on patient treatment schedules and clinical needs.
• Promptly communicate testing delays, critical results, specimen concerns, or equipment issues that may affect patient treatment.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA and organizational privacy requirements.

Minimum Qualifications
Education

• Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science, Chemical Science, or a related field required, or education that meets applicable state and federal requirements for the position.

Licensure/Certification

• Current and unrestricted Florida Clinical Laboratory Supervisor license appropriate to the testing performed within the practice required.
• Additional clinical laboratory licensure or certification as required based on testing responsibilities.
• National certification through ASCP, AMT, or another recognized credentialing organization preferred.
• Must maintain all required licenses, certifications, and continuing education throughout employment.

Experience

• Minimum of three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience required.
• Previous lead, supervisory, or laboratory oversight experience preferred.
• Experience in an oncology, hematology, physician practice, or outpatient laboratory setting preferred.
• Experience with hematology and chemistry testing strongly preferred.
