Senior Transportation Planner

Senior Transportation Planner – Transportation & Engineering Division at Jefferson County. Position Summary The Senior Transportation Planner coordinates county transportation objectives, oversees planning, design, and implementation of transportation infrastructure, and provides technical leadership on master plans. The role serves as the primary point of contact for development review application questions, coordinates with multiple county divisions and external partners, and performs complex professional work in transportation planning. Key Responsibilities Provide excellent customer service for citizen inquiries regarding transportation safety, planning, and multimodal facilities, evaluating roadway elements, preparing work orders and coordination with traffic technicians. Coordinate with other County staff and divisions to ensure maintenance practices, development review, design/construction standards, land development regulations, and walking and bicycling initiatives are integrated. Act as primary reviewer of site development plans, minor plats, roadway construction sheets, and related documents within development applications, capital improvement projects, safety projects, and maintenance projects. Organize, attend, and lead coordination meetings between County divisions and staff for maintenance, improvement, and development project planning. Assist in the management and implementation of transportation plans; solicit public and stakeholder input, evaluate and recommend changes. Create GIS‑based maps and integrate them with the County’s GIS efforts. Research and implement pilot programs for design, encouragement, transit demand management to increase walking, bicycling, and transit ridership. Research alternative funding sources, including grants, and coordinate with neighboring jurisdictions on joint applications. Attend regional planning forums such as RTD and DRCOG on transportation issues. Provide information and assistance to schools regarding transportation operations, bicycle and pedestrian safety, plans, and designs. Prepare and/or present staff meetings, Planning Commission hearings, and Board of County Commissioner hearings; respond to stakeholder questions. Update Transportation and Engineering Division website with educational materials on multimodal rules of the road and safety. Coordinating Activities Act as primary point of contact for development review application questions. Attend Planning & Zoning’s weekly Planning Engineering Meetings to provide consistent information and feedback on development review cases. Ensure TDCM Design, Technical Criteria, Road & Bridge maintenance considerations, and LDR Section 15 are consistently implemented across applications. Meet with Road & Bridge district supervisors (on‑site) to discuss applications and active transportation projects. Meet with outside agencies, such as CDOT, municipalities, and local districts to coordinate planning and construction for improvement projects. Qualifications Minimum Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban planning, engineering, or a related field and at least five years of transportation planning work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Expertise in transportation planning principles, concepts, standards, and practices. Ability to manage transportation‑related projects and uphold local, state, and federal regulations. Occasional local travel required. Preferred Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning or similar. Seven years of work experience. Experience with ArcGIS/ArcPro/ArcOnline and Microsoft Office Suite. Experience reviewing technical transportation elements of development applications. Knowledge of MUTCD standards. AICP certification and APA membership. Excellent communication and customer service skills, strong coordination ability, attention to detail, resourcefulness, initiative, and resilience. Compensation and Benefits Hiring range: $89,000 - $114,000 USD annually. Compensation based on education, experience, and skills.
