Description:
This unit cares for a mix of adult and pediatric patients.
The ratio of adults and pediatric patients may vary, and at times, there may be more adults than pediatric patients.
Candidates must have experience in adult telemetry.
Float to the medical-surgical unit is required to care for adult patients when necessary.
Candidates must pass a dysrhythmia exam within two attempts before signing the contract.
Failing to score 80% in two attempts results in a 6-month do-not-use status for specific locations.
The unit consists of 10 beds, with pediatric ratios being 1:3-4 and MST ratios being 1:5.
Common pediatric diagnoses include respiratory illnesses, seizures, dehydration, and appendicitis.
The unit does not handle feeding tubes, tracheostomies, or ventilators but will stabilize patients for transfer if needed.
Charge nurses oversee the management of 50 inpatient beds, including the mixed unit.
Nursing assistants take care of 10 patients; if there is no nursing assistant available, RNs take on 3 patients.
RNs are required to read telemetry strips, as remote monitor technicians are also present.
Weekend shifts are rotated every other weekend.
Holiday rotations distribute holidays evenly among staff.
If the census is low, staff may rotate standby duties.
Training includes floating to multiple units as needed, which may involve couplet care.
