Job Title: Welder - Mining Equipment

Job Description

This position focuses on structural welding and fabrication for the repair and refurbishment of large-scale mining equipment, primarily massive mining excavators. You will perform critical structural repairs in a large, swamp-cooled fabrication bay, addressing wear and damage caused by heavy equipment operation. The role requires strong welding, fabrication, and blueprint interpretation skills, along with a commitment to safety and high-quality workmanship in an industrial environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural welding repairs on large mining excavators and related heavy equipment, ensuring integrity and reliability of critical components.
  • Repair cracks, fractures, and worn components resulting from normal equipment operation and heavy-duty use.
  • Weld a variety of materials, including AR400 and other abrasion-resistant steels, as well as mild and softer steels, using appropriate techniques and procedures.
  • Gouge out defective or failed welds using carbon arc gouging or similar methods as part of repair and rebuild activities.
  • Use fabrication skills daily to cut, bend, fit, modify, and reinforce structural components, maintaining accurate dimensions and alignment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and weld symbols to plan and execute repairs and fabrication work correctly.
  • Operate oxy-acetylene torches to cut steel and preheat AR steel prior to welding, following safe operating practices.
  • Utilize power tools and grinding equipment to prepare surfaces, finish welds, and support fabrication and repair tasks.
  • Work safely in confined spaces and around oversized equipment, adhering to all safety protocols and procedures.
  • Maintain quality and accuracy while working on critical structural components, conducting visual checks and ensuring sound welds.
  • Communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and support teams to coordinate repairs, share status updates, and uphold safety and quality standards.
  • Contribute to a team-focused environment by collaborating on complex repairs and supporting continuous improvement in processes and workmanship.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience as a structural welder in heavy equipment, mining, or industrial environments.
  • Proficiency welding abrasion-resistant steels such as AR400 and similar materials, as well as mild steel.
  • Experience with carbon arc gouging or comparable weld removal techniques used in repair and rebuild work.
  • Strong fabrication skills, including layout, fit-up, cutting, bending, grinding, and structural reinforcement.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and weld symbols accurately.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively in a large bay environment around oversized mining machinery.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety, quality, and high standards of workmanship.
  • Comfort working in confined spaces and industrial settings with heavy equipment and power tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience in physically demanding industrial or mining repair work.
  • Familiarity with oxy-acetylene torch use for cutting steel and preheating AR steel prior to welding.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team-focused setting that relies on clear communication and coordination.
  • Adaptability to work on varied structural repair tasks and changing equipment conditions.
  • Reliability in following established safety procedures and contributing to a safe work culture.
