Email Address Contact Phone Number Position Summary This position performs at a journey level for all of the carpentry duties associated with, but not limited to, the maintenance, alteration, and repair of University facilities, furnishings, and equipment. This is a mandatory position as defined in the Adverse Weather and Emergency Event policy. Mandatory employees are expected to report to or remain at work during adverse weather and emergency events and, if deemed necessary, to work a different schedule or shift than normally assigned. This position may also be required to participate in the On-Call and Emergency Callback program as outlined in the Facilities Operations Standard Operating Procedure. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent, or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional guidelines: Experience in trade areas related to the assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Valid driver’s license Additional certification in operation of a 60 foot aerial work platform lift Preferred Qualifications Have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the carpentry trade, including making and installing cabinets. Have an excellent understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction. Be proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, etc.). Have an ability to read blueprints, drawings, and sketches. Having previous work experience in a University setting would also be beneficial. Key Responsibilities General Carpentry Responsibilities Excellent understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment, and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, etc.). Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and sketches. Take measurements and calculate the size and amount of material needed. Cut, shape, and smooth lumber and other materials according to project requirements. Build window frames, doors, staircases, decks, frame walls, etc., using raw materials or pre-constructed items. Fabricate furniture, cabinets, shelves, and other items, and install them. Lay out and install walls, flooring, drywall, and other materials in a professional manner. Perform carpentry and general building maintenance as required. Work closely with the supervisor to develop detailed work methods and strategies for difficult or unusual assignments. Maintenance and Construction Projects Works in support of in-house maintenance, renovation, and construction projects. Submits labor and material reports to the supervisor. Ensures enough materials are on hand for completion of the project. Completes project per specifications and in a professional manner. Ensures work is completed per building codes and university standards. Safely completes and performs other tasks as assigned by the supervisor. Performs Building and Shop Equipment Preventive Maintenance (PM) Performs PM tasks per the equipment manufacturer’s recommended schedule for building and shop equipment. Continually evaluates PM tasks and forwards recommendations to the PM coordinator. Performs PM inspections of all assigned areas. Identifies and records any deficiencies found. Initiates corrective work orders for repairs discovered during PM. Completes corrective work orders. Customer Service Provides the highest level of customer service possible, including keeping the customer updated throughout the work order process per the Service Request Communication SOP. Develops a good working relationship with contacts. Keeps the customer updated on work in progress and scheduled work, including completion dates. Checks with the customer upon completion of work to see if the work was completed to their satisfaction. Training and Safety Actively participates in all recommended training, including safety, and provides recommendations for any additional training as needed. Operates equipment, lifts, ladders, tools and vehicles in a safe manner and notifies supervisor of any potential safety issues. Uses provided personal protective equipment (PPE) and requests replacement or additional PPE as required. Follows all university and regulatory requirements and practices to ensure a safe working environment. Administrative Maintain accurate labor and material records on all work. Submit labor and material reports to the shop supervisor daily. Ensure sufficient quantities of frequently used material are available on the vehicle. Ensure the assigned vehicle is clean and available for service when required. Perform other tasks as may be safely and legally assigned by supervisor. Competency Knowledge - Technical Performs a variety of recurring and non-recurring tasks/functions. These tasks/functions may involve related or varying processes to test, renovate, overhaul, replace, and perform preventive maintenance on standard building systems. Provides technical assistance to others by troubleshooting standard facilities maintenance issues and determining their cause. Mentors other technicians. Problem Solving Identifies facilities‑related maintenance problems that require in‑depth analysis, and identifies options for solving those problems. Solves unusual facility maintenance problems that require the application of journey‑level trades knowledge and determines the most effective and efficient course of action. Gathers and analyzes/interprets information to better understand the nature of the problem. May seek input from subordinates, peers, and/or managers in the decision‑making process in order to solve the problem. Evaluates options and chooses appropriate action by considering potential outcomes. Make sure that the problem is appropriately addressed. Attention to Detail Ensures all work meets and/or exceeds applicable codes and standards. Checks and re‑checks work prior to, during, and after completion. Ensures that all parts of a project/task are completed. Uses appropriate record‑keeping methods. Coordination – Work Determines project/assignment by breaking them down into tasks. Sets objectives and prioritizes activities and tasks, adjusting priorities when appropriate. Takes advantage of available resources (personnel, processes, departments, and tools) to complete work efficiently. Anticipates obstacles and roadblocks and prepares alternative plans to ensure timely task accomplishment. Uses time effectively and does not let distractions interfere with the completion of the job/project. Explains the purpose and procedures of facilities maintenance projects in a language easily understood by the customer. Safety and Health Compliance Identifies and resolves potential safety problems and unsafe work practices. Demonstrates to employees and others safe ways to perform job tasks or the use of equipment. Informs supervisor of unusual safety concerns and makes recommendations for resolution. Determines appropriate protective equipment based on established standards. Regularly assesses site and shop operations for safety. Client/Customer Service Identifies options, develops solutions, and takes action when responding to customer requests. Satisfies individual customer requests while balancing multiple priorities. Assesses or checks with the customer to ensure the solution meets the request. Develops effective working relationships with internal/external customers (vendors, subcontractors, etc.) that further the work unit’s goals.
