Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Orthopedics Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience License: Required Certifications: BLS Certification Must-Have: Driver's license required Description: Registered Nurses are responsible for providing care to patients with a variety of medical and surgical conditions. The unit typically handles patients with total knees, total hips, shoulder replacements, and other orthopedic concerns. Common diagnoses include COPD, diabetes, wounds, IV infusions, dementia, oncology, fractures, sepsis, pneumonia, cholelithiasis, ambulatory dysfunction, appendicitis, and acute respiratory distress. The nurse-to-patient ratio is generally 1:5. Charge nurses are available on each shift and do take patient assignments. Nurse aides or patient care techs are present on the unit with a ratio of 1:10. Monitor techs are located in the ICU; however, monitors are also present at the main nurse's station. Nurses do not need to read their own telemetry strips as this is managed by the monitor techs. There is a focus on hourly rounding and bedside shift report on this unit. Candidates who enjoy change and have a desire to learn are preferred. Support and flexibility are essential, as the primary patient population may also include individuals experiencing homelessness and mental health or addiction issues. Weekend requirements typically involve every third weekend. The unit has a dress code that requires navy blue scrubs, which are provided. There are scheduled shifts from 0630 to 1900 and 1830 to 0700 with opportunities for self-scheduling. Additional requests for time-off must be communicated upfront as further requests might not be approved. This position is within an acute care setting and may involve various responsibilities typical of a medical surgical orthopedic environment.
