Medical Coder II

Job Summary The Medical Coder II is responsible for accurately assigning inpatient facility and professional medical codes, including ICD-CM, CPT, HCPCS, modifiers, and E&M codes, while ensuring compliance with DHA coding standards and documentation requirements. The role collaborates with providers and clinical staff to resolve documentation discrepancies, provide coding education and guidance, maintain productivity and accuracy standards, and support coding compliance across military healthcare systems. Required Qualifications Experience Four (4) years of medical coding and/or auditing experience in two (2) or more medical, surgical, and ancillary specialties within the past 10 years; OR Minimum of two (2) years of medical coding or auditing experience if that experience was in an MTF. A minimum of one (1) year of performance in the specialty is required to be documented to be considered qualifying. Education Associate's Degree or higher in Health Information, Healthcare Administration, or Biological Science. University Certificate in medical coding. At least 30 semester hours university/college credit that includes relevant coursework such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, or pharmacology. Certification One of the following recognized professional coding certifications: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA). One of the following recognized institutional coding certifications: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA). Medical Coding Test Minimum 80% passing score. For Medical Coder II ONLY: If you are missing the second required certification, Decypher will reimburse up to $495 for the exam post official start date (must pass the exam and be approved by the government before you can start working in this position). Key Responsibilities Accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient facility and professional services. Perform necessary tasks within MHS GENESIS and other military coding systems. Accurately assign Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD-CM diagnoses, CPT, and HCPCS, modifiers and quantities derived from medical record documentation (paper or electronic). Review encounter and/or record documentation to identify and resolve inconsistencies, ambiguities, or discrepancies. Assign accurate codes to encounters based upon provider responses to coding queries. Support DHA coding compliance by performing due diligence in ethically and appropriately researching and interpreting existing guidance, including seeking clarification through appropriate channels. Upon DHA-MCPB direction, utilize MHS computer systems to remotely access patient records and assign codes for patient encounters in support of other MTFs. Achieve and maintain DHA coding productivity and accuracy standards for the position. Educate and provide feedback to providers and clinical staff to resolve documentation issues to support coding compliance. Act as a source of reference to medical staff having questions, issues, or concerns related to coding. Respond to provider questions and provide examples of appropriate coding and documentation reference(s) to provide clarity and understanding. Collaborate with and support medical coding auditors, trainers, and compliance specialists in providing education and feedback to providers and staff. U.S. Citizenship is required. Work Environment and Schedule 100% Remote Up to 40 hours per week Compensation and Benefits Up to $38.09 per hour + H&W. Physical Requirements May be required to lift 20-25 pounds independently. Position requires long periods of sitting in an office setting.
