Nature of Work This is general police work that involves enforcement of all ordinances, statutes, and laws in accordance with Police Department policies and procedures. Tasks may include crime prevention, investigation and detection, protection of life and property, traffic control, and maintaining law and order in the community. Education and Experience High school graduate or equivalent. Citizen of the United States prior to completion of certification training. Twenty‑one years of age prior to completion of the training program. Valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Good character as determined by background investigation, including but not limited to the following: No convictions (or pardoned) of crimes punishable by imprisonment of one year or more, including Class 1 misdemeanors. No convictions of driving while intoxicated or under the influence in the two years immediately preceding admission. No punitive discharge from the United States Armed Forces. No denial, revocation, or suspension of certification status in this or another jurisdiction. No convictions of crimes involving threat or actual use of physical violence that would constitute a Class I misdemeanor. No convictions of crimes involving threat of or actual sexual assault or abuse. No convictions of crimes of physical violence or sexual abuse against a child or children. No convictions of domestic violence as defined in U.S. Code 18 USC 922(g)(9) that would disqualify from possessing a firearm. No order of protection that would disqualify from possessing a firearm under U.S. Code 922(g)(8). No indication of physical, mental, or emotional incapacity. No frequent criminal violations indicating disrespect for law and rights of others. No frequent traffic violations indicating disregard for traffic laws within the past three years. No pattern of substance abuse. No marijuana use for any purpose in the two years preceding application. No use of illegal drugs or narcotics other than marijuana in the five years preceding application. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English at the eleventh‑grade level. Certified by a licensed physician as able to meet the physical requirements of a police officer one year or less prior to admission, per State Statute 81‑1414, Title 79, Chapter 4. Pay Range $79,580.80 with step increases to $110,260.80 annually. Benefits Forty‑hour work week; twelve days of paid vacation per year for the first five years, sick leave, and twelve paid holidays. Examination Information The following testing process applies to applications received on or before July 27, 2026: The Physical Ability Test (PAT) is the first step, scheduled for the week of August 10, 2026, at the Public Safety Training Center. (Passing point: 3 minutes 52 seconds, Pass/Fail). Candidates who pass the PAT will be invited to the multiple‑choice examination scheduled for the week of August 10, 2026. Completion details will be shared with qualified candidates upon review by a recruiter. All testing must be completed in Omaha and cannot be administered remotely. The final score on the eligibility list is based solely on the multiple‑choice examination score (100%), with veteran preference points added as applicable. Veteran Points To claim five (5) points for veteran preference, submit proof of service (e.g., DD‑214) that includes date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. Must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty. To receive an additional five (5) points for disability, submit proof of eligibility from the Veterans Administration dated within the last 12 months. Submit all documentation to the Human Resources Department by August 15, 2026. Special Qualifications Citizen of the United States prior to completion of certification training. Twenty‑one (21) years of age prior to completion of the training program. Valid class "O" motor vehicle operator’s license. Maintain Nebraska state law enforcement certification. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge and ability to operate computers and technology, including video equipment, radio, camera, and software applications appropriate to assigned tasks. Continuous learning and adaptation to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software. Familiarity with the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and the Omaha Police Department mission. Completion of police academy for newly hired officers as prescribed by the Omaha Police Department. Ability to maintain adequate fitness, perform duties while wearing duty belt and bullet‑proof vest, and operate in inclement weather. Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English at the eleventh‑grade level. Physically meet the officer physical requirements as certified by a licensed physician one year or less prior to admission. Knowledge of department policy, standard operating procedures, regulations, and safety bulletins. Understanding of roadways, traffic patterns, and the Omaha service area. Knowledge of criminal and civil law, including juvenile, family, public health, safety, and vehicle code laws. Understanding of U.S. Constitution and related legal procedures. Skills in arrest and control tactics, use of less‑than‑lethal weapons, building search techniques, vehicle stopping procedures, and firearm use and safety. Maintenance procedures for departmental and personal equipment. Community policing and problem‑solving principles. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Proficiency with written and verbal communication, decision making, judgment, risk assessment, spatial awareness, problem analysis, management, supervision, leadership, interpersonal, public relations, planning, organization, composure, conflict resolution, teamwork, hearing, vision, smell, and clear speaking. Essential Functions Enforce federal, state, county, and city laws, including de‑escalation of chaotic situations and apprehension of suspects. Effect arrests for all incident types and ensure effective apprehension, arrest, and detention of suspects. Conduct investigations. Conduct patrol activities and traffic investigations as assigned. Use appropriate force when necessary, including firearms and weapons. Serve as first responder to disaster and emergency incidents. Communicate with law enforcement, emergency personnel, dispatchers, citizens, witnesses, offenders, and victims. Safeguard and account for evidence and non‑department property. Drive in emergency situations as required, monitor and direct traffic, conduct traffic stops, issue citations, investigate accidents, and aid motorists. Meet State of Nebraska and departmental qualifications for firearm use. Perform administrative duties, including writing reports, completing documentation, and serving warrants and subpoenas. Participate effectively in court procedures and training activities. Maintain regular job attendance per the position’s schedule. Perform other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of investigation.
