Cafeteria Worker Job Description

Under general supervision of the Food Services Director, facilitate the serving of attractive and nutritious meals in an atmosphere of cleanliness, efficiency, safety, and caring.

The criterion indicated below are intended to describe various types of work that may be performed. The exclusion of specific responsibilities does not prohibit them if the work is similar, related, or a logical task of the position.

• General Make safe, proper, and efficient use of all kitchen and dishwashing equipment and train others in its use as directed. Maintains the highest standards of safety and cleanliness in the dish room, prep area, cooking area, serving area, and eating area of the cafeteria and kitchen. HACCP record-keeping and proper food labeling (date/time/temperatures). Aid in the daily clean-up of the kitchen and serving areas as well as between serving lines clean up. Keep work area and other storage areas clean and organized. Able to communicate effectively with co-workers and managers. Confers with the Food Services Director on such other items as may be important to the safe and efficient operation of the facility. Fills in as directed for other work areas and jobs. Performs such other duties required by the Board of Education or the immediate supervisor.
• Dish Room Operate dish machines to company and manufacturer specifications. Restocks all trays, utensils, pots, and pans after cleaning is complete. Breaks down, cleans, and sanitizes the dish machine at the end of a shift. Reports to the Food Services Supervisor any supply needs or equipment problems in the dishwashing or serving area.
• Food Prep Prepare food and recipes according to a planned menu and determines if the finished product is of best quality both in flavor and appearance before it is served. Verifies that correct quantities of food are prepared and that the serving portions are of the correct size. Reports to the Food Services Supervisor any inferior quality food received. Helps with storage and care of foods and supplies. Proper food labeling, including leftovers, with date, time, and temp.

Cashier Operate a computer and/or take care of entering the students' breakfast/lunch during the serving period. Understands the components of a reimbursable meal and charges accordingly. Notify students as they come through the line of low balances.

Server Assists with the set up and serving of lunch. Serves with the proper portion control as specified by production record. Restock food items as necessary. Breaks down, cleans, and sanitizes the serving line at the end of the day. Clean cafeteria tables between lines, including removal of trash.

Education/Preparation Prior food experience in food service is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands Generally requires 90% standing, 10% walking, and a moderate amount of crouching, kneeling, climbing, lifting, pushing, or pulling. Manual dexterity and the ability to operate kitchen equipment are required. The ability to lift up to 40 pounds is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors, under moderate temperature and noise level variations. Work duties may include occasional work in outdoor weather conditions. The employee is partially responsible for the safety and well-being of various school stakeholders. Work environment will include extensive contact with students, staff, and volunteers.
