Controller – Construction Industry
Howell, NJ (Onsite)

Our client, a growing and well-established company in the construction industry, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead and manage all accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone with a strong background in construction accounting and expertise in QuickBooks Online .

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and safeguard company assets
• Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash flow management
• Manage accounting for fixed assets, including vehicles and equipment/containers
• Lead and support a small accounting team (1–2 staff), ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial data
• Prepare and manage annual budgets and forecasts
• Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide actionable insights to leadership
• Prepare and present monthly financial reporting packages to executive management
• Drive initiatives to improve profitability, reduce costs, and enhance operational efficiency
• Maintain relationships with banks, auditors, and external partners
• Partner with external CPA firm on annual tax preparation for multiple entities and ownership structures
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations, including multi-state filings
• Support special projects and initiatives as directed by leadership

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
• CPA or CMA designation preferred
• 7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or Accounting Manager role
• Required: Experience within the construction or contracting industry (e.g., construction, HVAC, landscaping, trucking, etc.)
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and analysis
• Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
• Experience with multi-state tax reporting (income, sales & use)
• Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization
• Detail-oriented, proactive, and adaptable with a strong work ethic
