Our client, a growing and well-established company in the construction industry, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead and manage all accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone with a strong background in construction accounting and expertise in QuickBooks Online .
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and safeguard company assets
- Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash flow management
- Manage accounting for fixed assets, including vehicles and equipment/containers
- Lead and support a small accounting team (1–2 staff), ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial data
- Prepare and manage annual budgets and forecasts
- Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide actionable insights to leadership
- Prepare and present monthly financial reporting packages to executive management
- Drive initiatives to improve profitability, reduce costs, and enhance operational efficiency
- Maintain relationships with banks, auditors, and external partners
- Partner with external CPA firm on annual tax preparation for multiple entities and ownership structures
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations, including multi-state filings
- Support special projects and initiatives as directed by leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA or CMA designation preferred
- 7 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or Accounting Manager role
- Required: Experience within the construction or contracting industry (e.g., construction, HVAC, landscaping, trucking, etc.)
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and analysis
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Experience with multi-state tax reporting (income, sales & use)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and adaptable with a strong work ethic
