Job Details

• Position: Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical/Telemetry

• Location: 2900 W Oklahoma Ave, Milwaukee, WI

• Duration: 13 weeks

• Shift: Night Shift, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM

• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week

• Floating: Required to other Medical-Surgical units and ED holding

• First-Time Travelers: Not accepted

Job Duties

• Provide nursing care to high-acuity Medical-Surgical and Telemetry patients.

• Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms and respond to changes in patient conditions.

• Care for patients with COPD, chest pain, heart failure, diabetes, cellulitis, wounds, post-operative conditions, and chronic tracheostomies.

• Manage patients with ventilators; respiratory therapists manage the ventilator equipment.

• Perform wound care, wound-vac management, tracheostomy care, PEG-tube care, tube feedings, and post-operative care.

• Initiate IVs, manage central lines, and administer/titrate prescribed Cardizem, heparin, and insulin drips.

• Manage TPN and other complex patient-care needs.

• Document assessments, interventions, and pain scores accurately in Epic.

• Perform charge nurse responsibilities and support unit coordination when assigned.

• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, technicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe patient care.

• Float to other Medical-Surgical units and ED holding as required.

Requirements

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.

• Minimum 2 years of RN Telemetry experience .

• Current BLS certification .

• Previous charge nurse experience and willingness to perform charge duties.

• Strong telemetry skills, including reading and interpreting cardiac rhythm strips.

• Experience with central lines, IV starts, and blood draws.

• Experience titrating Cardizem, heparin, and insulin drips.

• Required experience with tracheostomy management, chest tubes, drains, wound care, wound vacs, PEG tubes, tube feedings, and TPN.

• Previous ventilator experience and comfort caring for ventilated patients are required.

• High-acuity patient-care experience.

• Experience using Epic electronic health records.

• Must be comfortable caring for ventilated patients and floating to other units.

• Strong teamwork, communication, and time-management skills.

Additional Information

• The unit has 24 private rooms, including four rooms designated for ventilator patients.

• Night-shift nurse-to-patient ratios are approximately 1:6–7.

• Ventilator education and additional orientation with ventilator patients are provided; prior ventilator experience is still mandatory.

• Travelers are typically the first to float.

• Scheduling is prepared in six-week blocks, generally provided two weeks in advance.

• Staff may not work more than 60 hours per week or five consecutive 12-hour shifts under the facility’s fatigue policy.

• Free parking is available in the main parking structure.
