Tax Director / Senior Tax Manager / Principal (CPA)

We are a growing public accounting firm providing tax, accounting, and advisory services to small and medium businesses and individuals. Our firm is built on strong client relationships, efficient systems, and a commitment to developing leadership from within.

We are seeking a Senior Manager or Director/Principal-level CPA who is ready to take ownership of client relationships, lead engagements, and step into a key leadership role within the firm.

Position Overview

This candidate is an experienced CPA who is ready to move beyond technical execution into true client ownership and firm leadership. The ideal candidate will manage a portfolio of clients, review and sign tax returns, mentor staff, and contribute to the strategic growth of the firm.

This is a high-impact role with a clear path to Director (if not already at that level) and near future partnership opportunities.

This position is located in the Portland, OR metro area. With offices in Beaverton and Lake Oswego, this is an in-office or hybrid role. Out of market candidates will be considered selectively but the preference is for the candidate to be local.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of business and individual clients
• Provide proactive tax planning and advisory services
• Identify opportunities to expand services and deepen client relationships

Tax Review & Signing Authority

• Review complex tax returns (partnership, S-corp, corporate, and individuals)
• Sign returns as a licensed CPA
• Ensure technical accuracy, compliance, and adherence to firm standards

Leadership & Team Development

• Lead engagement teams and manage workflow across multiple staff levels
• Mentor and develop managers and senior staff
• Provide guidance on technical and client service matters

Firm Operations & Growth

• Participate in firm strategy, process improvement, and operational initiatives
• Assist with capacity planning and workflow management, especially during tax season
• Contribute to business development efforts, including networking and referrals (though not a primary responsibility)

Qualifications

• Active CPA license required
• 7–12+ years of public accounting experience
• Current role as Senior Manager or Director or Partner in a public accounting firm
• Strong experience reviewing complex tax returns and managing client relationships
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage multiple engagements
• Excellent communication and advisory skills

Preferred Experience

• Experience with closely held businesses and high-net-worth clients
• Proven track record of client retention and relationship growth
• Exposure to firm leadership, operations, or strategic initiatives
• Experience with modern firm systems and workflow tools (e.g., CCH, Canopy, or similar)
