Position Summary Responsible for providing quality, customer‑oriented laboratory services including registration, specimen collection and processing. Performs venipuncture on patients. Maintains necessary equipment and supplies. Communicates effectively with laboratory staff and external contacts, acting as a resource for phlebotomy technicians. This position is in the Phlebotomy Department, scheduled 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm with rotating weekends & holidays). Essential Responsibilities Perform venipunctures, including timed specimens, blood cultures, pediatric and neonatal specimens, following laboratory policies and procedures. Identify all patients and verify specimen identification, labeling specimens accurately. Receive and prepare laboratory specimens for analysis (study specimens, random and 24‑hour urines, send‑out specimens). Centrifuge and aliquot specimens and follow special handling instructions. Optimize specimen routing and workbench organization, prioritizing stat and routine specimens. Route and distribute specimens to appropriate laboratory sections within specified time frames. Assist with pickup and delivery of specimens as needed. Prepare workstations with essential supplies and monitor daily temperatures, performing scheduled equipment maintenance. Complete logs for documentation and troubleshooting and communicate with supervisors. Utilize technical training and acquire in‑depth knowledge of the LIS; perform basic LIS functions (order/entry, inquiry, crediting). Perform patient registration in the EPIC system, including demographic updates, insurance validation, eligibility checks, and assigning medical record numbers. Answer telephone calls according to department policy. Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including patient rights and behavioral standards. Manage time appropriately and meet BMC attendance and punctuality standards. Attend department meetings, deliver reports, and document quality improvement activities. Assist in training new laboratory support technicians and phlebotomy students. Complete safety, compliance, and competency training and follow infection control procedures. Perform special procedures requested by supervisors and update inventories, orders, and supplies. Assist in writing training programs, SOPs, and establishing competencies. Participate in quality improvement activities and validate effectiveness of implemented solutions. Diagnose and resolve technical and non‑technical problems and maintain problem logs. Adapt to changing departmental needs, support teamwork and assist other team members. Job Requirements Education: High School Diploma or GED; completion of a NAACLS‑accredited phlebotomy program. Certificates, Licenses & Registrations: Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred. Experience: One year of phlebotomy and/or specimen processing experience. Knowledge and Skills: Excellent oral and written English communication and interpersonal skills. Technical competency with hospital computer systems (Microsoft Office, EPIC, and LIS such as Sunquest). Strong analytical, critical‑thinking, and organizational abilities; meticulous attention to detail. Strict confidentiality of personal/health‑sensitive information. Ability to handle challenging situations, balance multiple priorities, and work effectively in a team. Compensation: $20.50 - $26.52 per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
