Advanced Practice Provider, Orthopedics - Per Diem

Job Title Advanced Practice Provider – Ortho Job Code 800723; 800727 (per diem) Department Orthopaedics Minimum Qualifications Education: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program. Experience: No experience required. Licensure/Registration/Certification: Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the State of Minnesota. Physician Assistant Certification required OR Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of MN. Current Nurse Practitioner Certification required. BLS or ACLS certification required. Preferred Qualifications Experience: Prefer 1–2 years’ experience in the orthopedic surgery and clinic environment which includes First Assisting and seeing patients independently. Position Summary The Advanced Practice Provider in Orthopaedic Services is responsible for the coordination of care of orthopaedic patients. In the operating room and on the nursing units, the position will first assist the surgeon by preparing grafts, closing the incision and first and second assisting the surgeon as needed. On the inpatient nursing unit, this position will coordinate the patient’s care and assist the surgeon in directing the post‑operative nursing care for these patients. Major functions include patient assessment, writing medication and treatment orders and performing, or directing specific tasks. Daily and rotating inpatient weekend rounding and/or call is expected. Per‑diem APP Ortho positions are required to work at least one weekend per quarter, or as determined by the Ortho department. Major Job Duties and Tasks Assist orthopaedic surgeons in the care of orthopaedic patients in the operating room and post‑operatively on the nursing units (30%) Coordinates the management of care with the surgeon, fellow, residents and nursing staff for orthopaedic patients. Maintains knowledge of current pre‑ and post‑operative care. Changes dressings, applies and removes casts, splints and braces. Writes orders for medications and treatments as necessary to facilitate post‑operative care. Completes discharge order sets and dictates discharge summaries in a timely manner to facilitate discharge. Daily rounding on inpatients at Regions Hospital and/or affiliated sites with monthly weekend rounding and/or call responsibilities as assigned. Obtains consults and collects pertinent patient information. Coordinates the admitting process. Maintains and reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Documents in the EMR. Discusses and develops diagnosis and pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic treatment plans with staff physician, on both inpatient and outpatient patients. Educates patient and family on the diagnosis, treatment and recovery process including prescribed medications. See patients in the outpatient clinic setting independently and with surgeons (30%) Obtain history and examine patients. Orders appropriate labs, radiology exams and medications. Performs minor procedures. Provide education to and be a resource for the inpatient and surgical services staff (10%) Explains procedures to nursing staff to assist in care planning. Provides patients/families with explanations of treatments to assist in decision‑making/informed consent process. Obtains informed consent as needed. Establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with other members of the health care team across the organization (10%) Routinely discusses and collaborates with physicians and other members of the health care team regarding the patient’s plan of care. Responds to requests for consultation in a timely and effective manner in order to provide for patient care needs. Demonstrates understanding of collaborative relationships by appropriately identifying and directing patient care within the scope of practice for an Advanced Practice Provider. Deals with conflict or confrontation in a professional manner. Participates on committees as assigned. Discuss with and instruct patient/family members regarding treatment and follow‑up and communicate information to the care team in a timely and effective manner (10%) Functions as liaison between patient/family and other health care team members and the physician. Verbal and written communication is complete, accurate and timely. Initiates and/or participates in team conferences, family meetings, etc. Deals with conflict and confrontation in a respectful and professional manner. Assist with research studies as requested (10%) Interview patients and collect information including authorization forms. Discuss cases with surgeons. Maintain appropriate documentation and databases as needed. Effectively problem‑solve Maintain knowledge of regulatory influences (CMS, JCAHO) and apply those standards to clinical practice. Be open to changing priorities, adjust work accordingly. As assigned, participate and lead discussion for the purpose of clinical problem solving. Set priorities. Use critical thinking skills. Maintain knowledge of regulatory influences and apply those standards to clinical practice. Improve/expand clinical expertise through reading, attending in‑services. Complete annual required education. Participate in local/national professional organizations. Keep current in clinical and education practice issues both regionally and nationally through networking, reading and dialogue. Maintain own professional competency, certifications and visibility. Physical Requirements Work environment includes office, operating room and clinical nursing care units. Office/OR/Nursing Unit Environment: Stand 4‑6 hours and walk 2‑4 hours daily while performing duties. May view a computer screen for up to 3 hours a day. Lift, push, pull training equipment up to 50 lbs. Must be able to transport self throughout the hospital. Must be able to perform tasks requiring fine motor and hand/eye coordination. Environmental Conditions Office Environment: May be exposed to printer/copier cartridges, no extreme conditions. OR/Patient Care Unit: May be exposed to hazardous substances, harmful physical agents and infectious agents that exist in the patient care area in the performance of duties. In the operating room, may be exposed to sharps, anesthesia gasses and radiation (x‑ray). Equipment Office Environment: Computer, fax, printer, copy machine and other office machines.
