Analytical Development Chemist
This role sits within the Analytical Development team in the Quality Control department and focuses on supporting new client projects through analytical testing, method development, and method transfer activities. You will work with raw materials and finished products, perform impurity testing, and support higher-level projects under the guidance of senior chemists. This position offers exposure to both GMP and R&D work, with strong opportunities to grow technical skills and scientific writing capabilities in a modern, collaborative laboratory environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform analytical testing on raw materials and finished products to support new client projects and ongoing production activities.
- Operate and maintain HPLC systems as a primary analytical tool for method execution and data generation.
- Run dissolution testing and interpret results in accordance with established methods and quality standards.
- Perform GC testing as needed, particularly for finished product analyses that require gas chromatography.
- Execute basic laboratory techniques, including pipetting, weighing samples, assessing appearance, measuring water content, and evaluating particle size.
- Conduct impurity testing and contribute to understanding impurity profiles and related analytical requirements.
- Participate in analytical development activities, including method development, method verification, method transfer, and method validation.
- Support high-level chemists and scientists on complex projects by performing assigned analytical tasks and providing accurate data.
- Train on and perform raw material testing using titrators and other wet chemistry techniques under GMP conditions.
- Document all laboratory work clearly and accurately in accordance with GMP and quality control requirements.
- Collaborate with a small team of chemists, sharing workload and contributing to a team-focused environment.
- Adapt to an open-ended workflow by proactively identifying and prioritizing work rather than waiting for directed assignments.
- Troubleshoot issues during method development or testing and maintain a positive, solutions-focused attitude when tests fail or require rework.
- Follow all laboratory safety procedures and quality control standards while working in a regulated environment.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, or a related life science field.
- 2–5 years of experience working with HPLC instrumentation, including routine operation and data interpretation.
- 2–5 years of experience working with dissolution testing in a laboratory environment.
- 2–5 years of experience working with GC instrumentation.
- 2–5 years of experience working under GMP regulations in a quality control or similar laboratory setting.
- Hands-on experience with general wet chemistry techniques, including titration.
- Experience in quality control testing and laboratory-based QC workflows.
- Ability to perform precise laboratory techniques such as pipetting, weighing, and basic physical testing.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established methods and procedures.
- Self-motivated approach with the ability to work independently after training.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and communicate clearly with colleagues.
- Capacity to handle open-ended work, think independently, and seek out tasks without constant direction.
- Positive attitude with resilience to handle setbacks, such as failed tests in method development.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Analytical development experience, including exposure to method development, method verification, method transfer, or method validation.
- Fundamental knowledge of impurity testing and the concepts underlying impurity profiling.
- Experience balancing both GMP and R&D-focused analytical work.
- Interest in developing scientific writing skills over time, including documenting methods and results.
- Willingness to learn new instrumentation and techniques beyond core HPLC, dissolution, and GC methods.
- Self-awareness and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team of chemists across different QC functions.
- Drive to push personal development and continuously expand technical capabilities.
- Comfort working in a more introverted, focused team environment.
Work Environment
The role is based in a modern Quality Control laboratory within an Analytical Development team that has a history of low turnover and strong tenure among chemists. The team consists of approximately six chemists and works alongside other QC chemistry teams focused on raw materials, finished products, analytical development, environmental monitoring, and QC specialist functions. The lab has been recently remodeled, offering a contemporary, open layout with shared workspaces for chemists below the scientist level, while scientist-level staff have individual desks. All chemists use laptops and work in a collaborative environment that emphasizes teamwork and knowledge sharing. The team tends to train new members on HPLC more quickly than other groups and provides exposure to varied instrumentation and scientific writing as employees progress. The position operates under GMP conditions in a laboratory setting, with a structured yet open-ended workload that allows for ongoing learning and development. Full-time employees receive eight paid holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day After Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day) and accrue paid time off that increases with tenure. PTO begins accruing immediately, can be used upon approval even during the initial probationary period, and rolls over year to year, supporting work-life balance for both contract and permanent staff.
